Position Summary
The City of Bozeman is now accepting applications for a Transportation Planner to support our Transportation & Engineering Team. The City of Bozeman is now accepting applications for an Engineer I-II to support our Transportation & Engineering Team. This position works directly with the City Transportation Engineer to plan, design and implement transportation projects and programs in line with the plans and goals of the city. This position includes working with residents to address transportation concerns, conducting engineering studies to evaluate potential changes to signing and striping, administering the city's traffic calming program, reviewing engineering permits, and assisting with development review. The position will at times provide support to other teams within the engineering department.

Work Week: Monday through Friday, 8:00am to 5:00pm

Engineer I: $89,539.42 - $98,394.97 annually DOE
Engineer II: $103,383.28 - $114,108.00 annually DOE

Examples of Essential Work (Illustrative Only)
  • Plans, recommends, and approves appropriate designs, construction, and maintenance of City streets, sidewalks, traffic signals, drainage systems, sanitary and sewer systems, and other related public improvements based on City codes and regulations and professional standards;
  • Provides technical engineering services, advice, information, and recommendations to the City Manager, City Commission, and City department and division heads;
  • Notifies property owners of property impacts and construction schedules of projects as requested, including addressing and resolving property-owner and citizen complaints and concerns about projects;
  • Completes all necessary reports, charts, graphs, and correspondence;
  • Monitors the work and progress of consultants on construction plan development and construction cost estimates, including ensuring that plan development criteria are followed, reviewing plans for compliance to City standards, and making schedule due date adjustments as necessary;
  • Provides needed information and demonstrations concerning how to perform certain work tasks to new employees in the same or similar class of positions;
  • Keeps immediate supervisor and designated others accurately informed concerning work progress, including present and potential work problems and suggestions for new or improved ways of addressing such problems;
  • Attends meetings, conferences, workshops, and training sessions and reviews publications and audio-visual materials to become and remain current on principles, practices, and new developments in assigned work areas;
  • Responds to citizens' questions and comments in a courteous and timely manner;
  • Communicates and coordinates regularly with appropriate others to maximize the effectiveness and efficiency of interdepartmental operations and activities;
  • Performs other duties consistent with the role and function of this classification.


Minimum Required Qualifications

Engineer I:
  • Bachelor's Degree in Civil Engineering, Civil Engineering Technology, or a closely related field; and
  • 0-2 years experience in Civil Engineering; or
  • Any combination of experience and training which provides the equivalent scope of knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to perform the work.
Engineer II:
  • Bachelor's Degree in Civil Engineering or a closely related field; and
  • Considerable (3-5 years) experience in Civil Engineering; or
  • Any combination of experience and training which provides the equivalent scope of knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to perform the work.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Thorough knowledge of all pertinent Federal, State, and local laws, codes, ordinances, and regulations;
  • Thorough knowledge of modern practices of civil engineering related to planning, design, construction, maintenance and operation of a wide variety of public works facilities, including working knowledge of hydraulics, survey, road design, water, sewer, and storm design;
  • Thorough knowledge of department operations, policies, and procedures;
  • Thorough knowledge of environmental impact issues, laws, and regulations;
  • Thorough knowledge of generally accepted construction standards and construction methods, materials, techniques, phases, practices, and procedures;
  • Thorough knowledge of construction plans, specifications, and construction details;
  • Thorough knowledge of the principles and practices of plan development and the use of all necessary drawing equipment and software;
  • Substantial knowledge of purchasing and finance policies, procedures, and processes;
  • Ability to develop complete and accurate plans, specifications, and construction notes;
  • Ability to effectively coordinate department services with other departments and providers;
  • Ability to effectively review and oversee the work of contractors and consultants;
  • Ability to effectively detect any discrepancies or deficiencies in project construction work and construction plans;
  • Ability to work effectively with angry and emotionally distraught individuals and address and resolve complaints and concerns of citizens and home-owners;
  • Ability to make quick and accurate computations;
  • Ability to communicate effectively with others, both orally and in writing, using both technical and non-technical language;
  • Ability to understand and follow oral and/or written policies, procedures, and instructions;
  • Ability to prepare and present accurate and reliable reports containing findings and recommendations;
  • Ability to operate or quickly learn to operate a personal computer using standard or customized software applications appropriate to assigned tasks;
  • Ability to use logical and creative thought processes to develop solutions according to written specifications and/or oral instructions;
  • Ability to perform a wide variety of duties and responsibilities with accuracy and speed under the pressure of time-sensitive deadlines;
  • Ability and willingness to quickly learn and put to use new skills and knowledge brought about by rapidly changing information and/or technology;
  • Integrity, ingenuity, and inventiveness in the performance of assigned tasks.


Required Special Qualifications
Engineer I:
  • Valid Driver's License (must obtain a valid Montana Driver's License within 60 days of employment;
  • Possession of an EIT (Engineer in Training) Certification;
  • Offers for employment are conditional upon satisfactory response to appropriate post conditional offer process.
Engineer II:
  • Possession of a Montana Professional Engineer License, or ability to obtain a Montana Professional Engineer's License within 6 months of the date of employment;
  • Valid Driver's License (must obtain valid Montana Driver's License within 60 days of employment);
  • Offers for employment are conditional upon satisfactory response to appropriate post conditional offer process.
