Job Title: Cytotechnologist
Job Specialty: Pathology Cytology Lab
Job Duration: 13 weeks
Shift: 5 a.m. to 1:30 p.m., some flexibility for morning start times. No weekends, no on-call.
Guaranteed Hours: 40 hours per week
Experience: At least 3 years of experience preferred
License: Not specified
Certifications: Thin Prep imaging and Thin Prep certificates required
Must-Have: Completion of 2024 or 2025 proficiency test for starts after May 13, FNA adequacy experience is a plus, primary experience in PAP screening on Thin Prep imager
Job Description:
- Process specimens and stain smears in accordance with departmental guidelines.
- Examine prepared, stained smears microscopically to detect structural abnormalities.
- Classify smears based on cellular knowledge as normal (negative), abnormal, or diagnostic of cancer.
- Correlate surgical reports with cytologic findings.
- Rotate on technical processing, cubicle position, and NGYN screening according to schedule set by the leader/supervisor.
- For gynecological specimens (Pap smears), determine cases needing further evaluation, issue diagnostic reports on normal cases, and perform follow-up triage.
- Assist in training of medical laboratory technicians, cytotechnology students, residents, fellows, and new staff orientation.
- Maintain competency in using information systems for daily work.
- Maintain documentation for daily workload, follow-ups, and rotation assignments.
- Attend fine needle aspiration procedures and assist the physician.
- Participate in the laboratory's continuing medical education program.
- Engage in quality improvement programs, including development of new or improved methods and procedures.
- Maintain laboratory equipment and document preventive maintenance and corrective actions.
- Communicate professionally and courteously, relaying messages and cytology results to clinical staff.
- Perform any cytopathology-related tasks assigned by the supervisor or division head.
