General Summary

Under general supervision of the City Engineer or designee, the Graduate Engineer will assist with current and long-term planning, engineering, development, and capital improvement activities. Strong interpersonal relationship skills are required along with a strong desire to succeed and grow a career as an engineer.

MINIMUM EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS
  • Bachelor of Science Degree in Civil Engineering from ABET accredited college.
  • Successful completion of the Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) Exam and
  • 0-4 years of civil engineering experience.
  • Experience can be replaced with education.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Reviews developer's plans and specifications within scope of knowledge for the appropriate design of public works projects and compliance with City Code of Ordinances and Technical Standards.
  • Participate in engineering design for municipal public works including street/drainage water and wastewater utilities engineering.
  • Develop proficiency working within AutoCAD
  • Estimate construction costs for projects.
  • Write construction specifications and assemble plans, answer questions during bid process, recommend awarding or contract.
  • Coordinate projects with other utilities and city departments.
  • Coordinate project tasks with surveyors, engineers, engineering technicians, construction inspectors, and suppliers
  • Provides customer service to the public related to public works facilities and general engineering inquiries.
  • Provides assistance to developers, land owners, and real estate agencies on engineering issues related to subdivisions of property.
  • Provides review comments on plats to the planning group.
  • Reviews engineering designs, specifications, costs and quantity estimates of public work projects: for; streets, water and sewer systems construction, water, storm sewer and waste-water lift station facilities and utility structures and work with City Engineer and with other Engineering firms.
  • Contributes to the maintenance of map records for the City's Infrastructure. Assists GIS staff with computerized mapping and geographical information system for City infrastructure.
  • Provides general support to the engineering group and the City Engineer.
  • Assembles, researches, and summarizes information from various sources and prepares special or recurring reports for the City.
  • Performs all other duties as assigned.

Skills, Knowledge, and Abilities

  • Knowledge of generally accepted principles and practices of engineering as it relates to construction of public infrastructure and private site construction.
  • Knowledge of water, sewer, storm and hydrology/hydraulic design.
  • Knowledge of Project Management principles and practices.
  • Knowledge of basic laws, ordinances and regulations underlying municipalities.
  • Skilled in using highly technical computer applications, such as GIS or CAD.
  • Skilled in the use of Microsoft Office.
  • Skilled in reading, interpreting, explaining and applying laws, codes, ordinances, rules, regulations, policies and procedures.
  • Ability to read, interpret, and evaluate construction drawings, contract documents, technical specifications, title reports, easement and right-of-way documents, technical reports, for compliance with City ordinances and design regulations.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships.
  • Ability to provide customer service to internal and external customers, including the general public.
  • Ability to read and interpret construction drawings
  • Ability to work with contractors, consultants, developers, property owners, and the general public.
  • Ability to communicate effectively, both oral and written, through clear, concise documents/reports.
  • Ability to research, collect, analyze, summarize and prepare both technical and administrative reports and correspondence.
  • Ability to set priorities and meet deadlines for specific projects.
  • Ability to work as a team with other departments in the accomplishment of work tasks.
  • Ability to work independently, with minimal supervision, and use rational judgment in making work-related decisions.
