The Los Angeles Community College District (LACCD) announces a full-time, tenure-track Librarian position at Los Angeles Southwest College (LASC). The position is scheduled to begin Fall 2025. Interested individuals who meet the state of California minimum qualifications and possess the required training and experience are invited to apply for the position.

LASC is in southwest Los Angeles, approximately 20 minutes south of downtown Los Angeles, and 15 minutes east of the Pacific Ocean. In honor of its founding history, LASC empowers a diverse student population to achieve their academic and career goals, and to become critical thinkers and socially responsive leaders. A 20-year vision became a reality for a dedicated group of residents in February 1967 when the Los Angeles Board of Education approved plans to build a community college at the corner of Western Avenue and Imperial Highway in Los Angeles. On September 11, 1967, LASC officially opened its doors with 600 students and 22 full-time faculty members. Since then, LASC has established itself as an educational and cultural hub for the southern part of Los Angeles and the surrounding communities. In addition to classroom instruction, students are exposed to a myriad of learning experiences to broaden their horizons, to expand their options and alternatives, to develop an appreciation for academic work ethic, and to understand intellectual pursuits.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

At LASC, the Library and the librarians are central to fulfilling the mission of the college. The Library is seeking a student-centered librarian to join our team in providing effective and engaging library services and learning opportunities.

Duties and responsibilities associated with the position involve activities within the department as well as the larger college setting. These duties may include but are not limited to the following:
  • Provide reference services and research assistance to college students, faculty, and staff.
  • Demonstrate commitment to teaching and the ability to create a classroom environment focused on active learning in which all students are welcomed and encouraged to participate.
  • Promote and encourage a learning environment of respect and fairness, while encouraging creative and critical thinking and lifelong learning.
  • Incorporate the use of current technology in library services, direct instruction, and course materials.
  • Participate in collection and curriculum development that is responsive to a diverse community, students' needs and interests, and changing technologies in contemporary learning environments.
  • Assist with the development and management of the library's electronic resources.
  • Participate in the development and assessment of Student Learning Outcomes.
  • Collaborate with the department chair and librarians in administrative requirements such as program reviews and self-evaluation reports for accreditation.
  • Engage in department and college committees and initiatives, as well as the shared governance of the College.
  • Assist in developing, evaluating and improving library services.
  • Remain current in professional practices and trends, especially regarding web and electronic resources.
  • Perform other academic duties as assigned.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
  • Master's degree in Library Science, OR Library and Information Science, OR the equivalent
  • Sensitivity to and an understanding of the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disability, and ethnic backgrounds of community college students.

ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENT COVID 19 VACCINATION

Pursuant to LACCD Board of Trustee's Policy 2900, all students and employees must be fully vaccinated by November 8, 2021 and complete a baseline test or have an approved exemption. LACCD employees are required to provide their vaccination status in compliance with the LACCD Board of Trustees' policy. Newly hired employees will be required to provide their vaccination status prior to starting a position or, at the latest, by their position start date.

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS
  • At least three (3) years of experience providing reference/information services in an academic library.
  • College level teaching experience and ability to teach a variety of Library Science courses.
  • Ability to maintain and update library web resources.
  • Experience with assessment of student learning (e.g., Student Learning Outcomes).
  • Knowledge of and demonstrated experience with learning theories.
  • Ability to work with other disciplines to create an integrated learning environment.
  • A strong sense of public service and the ability to work collaboratively with students, faculty, staff, the community and external funding resources.
  • Demonstrated ability and commitment to work effectively and professionally with colleagues.
  • Strong oral and written communication skills.

SELECTION CRITERIA

In addition to the requirements and responsibilities listed, the following criteria will be considered in selecting candidates for interviews:

  • Curriculum and Program development;
  • Community involvement;
  • Demonstrated experience in working with a diverse socioeconomic community;
  • Credentials or minimum qualifications authorizing service in other areas of need;
  • Demonstrated ability to work cooperatively with others.

Based upon the information presented on the application materials, a limited number of candidates with qualifications most pertinent to the position will be invited to participate in the selection process, which includes a written exercise and oral presentation. More specific details will be provided prior to the interview date.

SALARY AND BENEFITS

The LACCD determines placement on the pay scale depending on verified education and employment history. Current starting annual salary range is from $74,250 to $138,430 for the 10-month academic year. The doctoral differential is $4,710 per academic year. Benefits include medical, dental and vision insurance for employees and eligible dependents, life insurance and retirement program; State Teacher's Retirement System.
