Introduction
Instana is looking for a Backend Software Developer to join our team in Toronto. At Instana, we process and analyze millions of spans, traces, metrics, and events per second to provide actionable observability intelligence to our rapidly expanding customer base.
Your role will encompass the entire software engineering life cycle, including technical design, implementation, quality assurance, production delivery, maintenance, and customer support. If you're interested, you may also assist the team designer with requirements engineering tasks and customer interviews.
You will collaborate with your peers to develop a Java-based streaming backend that primarily utilizes Dropwizard, Kafka, ElasticSearch, and Cassandra.

Your role and responsibilities
- Collaborate with Product Management and implement feature roadmaps.
- Leverage modern tools and techniques to develop clean, efficient, and reusable code.
- Contribute to performance optimization.
- Review code and promote test automation.
- Handle issues reported by our customers.
- Provide production support to our SREs, field teams, and customers for the features we develop.
- Mentor junior developers as we grow the team.
Required education
Bachelor's Degree
Required technical and professional expertise
- 5+ years programming experience in Java, J2EE, and JavaScript.
- Experience in developing microservices for distributed systems.
- Experience in container technologies like Docker, Kubernetes.
- Experience working with datastores such as Cassandra, ElasticSearch, or Kafka.
- Experience in automation testing frameworks like JUnit, Mockito, Spring Test, Cypress.
- Ability to learn new technologies quickly.
- Good code writing discipline and an eye for code efficiency.
- Strong analytical thinking and problem-solving techniques.
- Fluent in written and spoken English.
Preferred technical and professional experience
- Experience working in cloud service providers like IBM Cloud, AWS, Google, or Azure.
- Experience with the functional reactive programming paradigm, such as Project Reactor.
