Description:

Nevada Gold Mines is seeking a highly qualified Senior Environmental Engineer with expertise in closure planning and permitting to join our Environmental Team at the Cortez operation. This critical role demands a candidate capable of effectively managing site reclamation and closure programs while facilitating the acquisition of essential federal and state permits. The successful candidate will lead a team dedicated to ensuring regulatory compliance with the site's Plan of Operations and fulfilling obligations related to biodiversity and cultural resources.
Key Responsibilities:
  • Site Closure Plans:
    Lead the comprehensive development and execution of site closure plans, including conducting necessary studies and mitigation activities essential for the successful closure of inactive facilities.
  • Reclamation Management:
    Oversee reclamation permits for the site, managing the reclamation cost model, surety bonds, and long-term trusts effectively.
  • Financial Compliance:
    Ensure adherence to the company's closure and accounting standards, accurately tracking and reporting reclamation liabilities to maintain financial transparency and compliance.
  • Cultural Resource Coordination:
    Manage the site's cultural resource program, coordinating with qualified archaeology consultants and federal and state authorities on cultural surveys and the implementation of mitigation activities.
  • Data Interpretation:
    Analyze monitoring data related to compliance, reclamation, and closure programs, including water quality, geochemistry, vegetation, and material characterization.
  • Collaboration on Permitting:
    Work closely with the Engineering/Mine Planning and Permitting Teams to facilitate federal and state permitting actions, actively participating in the development and submission of modifications to the site's Plan of Operations and Reclamation Permits.
  • Stakeholder Communication:
    Establish effective communication with a variety of stakeholders, including Federal and State authorities, to share monitoring results and collaborate on permitting and closure strategies.
  • Program Management:
    Participate in the planning, design, budgeting, and supervision of environmental compliance programs and projects, ensuring their effective implementation.
  • Team Leadership:
    Lead and mentor Environmental Engineers and Technicians as assigned.
  • Regulatory Compliance:
    Adhere to state and federal health and safety regulations, as well as all company policies and procedures.


  • Education:
    Bachelor's degree in Environmental Engineering, Mine Engineering, Environmental Science, Geology, Hydrology, Ecology, or a related field is required.
  • Experience:
    • Minimum of five (5) years of experience in permitting, mine planning, environmental compliance, or reclamation/closure roles is required.
    • At least three (3) years of supervisory experience is required.
  • Communication Skills:
    • Exceptional verbal, written, presentation, and interpersonal skills are required.
    • Proven ability to prepare technical communications and effectively convey results to diverse audiences is essential.
  • Project Management:
    • Demonstrated capability to manage multiple projects simultaneously is required.
    • Ability to work independently and within small, multi-disciplinary teams is essential.
  • Technical Skills:
    • Proficient in computer applications, including MS Office and data management programs, is required.
    • Strong analytical skills with the ability to interpret analytical and monitoring data, particularly in water quality and geochemistry, are preferred.
  • Safety Record:
    • Excellent safety record with a demonstrated ability to exhibit safety leadership is required.
  • Regulatory Compliance:
    • Experience managing regulatory compliance programs in the state of Nevada is preferred.
    • Familiarity with NEPA and state-level permitting actions is also preferred.
  • Biodiversity Management:
    • Experience in managing biodiversity programs and initiatives, including designated/protected species management, noxious weed management, or habitat management, is preferred.
  • Standards and Skills:
    • Familiarity with ISO 14001 standards is preferred.
    • Strong GIS skills are also preferred.
