Position Overview
Reporting to the Head of Finance & Accounting, the Controller will lead the accounting operations and financial reporting across Blumhouse's divisions, including feature film, television, and video games. Reporting to the Head of Finance & Accounting, the Controller will lead the accounting operations and financial reporting across Blumhouse's divisions, including feature film, television, and video games. This role combines technical accounting expertise with strategic process improvement to support the company's dynamic business model and growth initiatives.
Key Responsibilities
Financial Leadership & Reporting
- Ensure compliance with US GAAP across all financial reporting and accounting processes
- Lead monthly close process (targeting 15-to-30-day close cycles) and preparation of consolidated financial statements across all divisions
- Own and maintain robust internal controls and policies to ensure integrity of financial operations and reporting
- Manage quarterly and annual reporting requirements for investors and banking partners
- Oversee external audit and tax processes and maintain strong relationships with auditors and tax preparers
- Drive continuous improvement in close processes and reporting timelines
- Lead technical accounting function, including review of all business deals and transactions, development of accounting positions, and maintenance of comprehensive documentation and processes
Team Leadership & Development
- Lead and develop a high-performing accounting organization that can scale with company growth
- Establish clear roles, responsibilities, and career development paths for team members
- Provide mentorship and guidance to accounting staff
Process & Systems Optimization
- Drive efficiency and accuracy through optimization of existing systems (Sage Intacct, Ramp, Concur, FloQast)
- Lead process improvement initiatives to streamline accounting operations
- Ensure effective integration of production accounting data into corporate financial statements
Business Partnership
- Serve as primary accounting contact for senior leadership across the company, providing guidance and support on financial matters
- Partner closely with CFO, Head of Finance & Accounting, Head of Planning, and Production Finance Lead
- Manage relationships with external stakeholders including auditors and banking partners
- Support various divisions (film, television, video games) with technical accounting guidance
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Accounting or related field; CPA required
- 7-to-10 years of accounting experience, with at least 5 years in entertainment industry and 3 years at the controller or director level.
- Strong technical accounting knowledge and demonstrated expertise in US GAAP, particularly in ASC 606 revenue recognition and content asset accounting
- Proven experience developing and maintaining technical accounting positions for complex business arrangements
- Experience managing complex consolidations and intercompany relationships
- Proven track record of leading month-end close processes and external reporting
- Experience managing and developing accounting teams
- Strong systems knowledge and commitment to process improvement
- Familiar with production finance processes and reporting
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience at an independent film or television company
- Video game industry experience
- Experience managing accounting for multiple operating entities and production SPVs
- Track record of implementing process improvements and automation
- Experience with start-up businesses or demonstrated ability to adapt to new industries
- Big Four experience a plus but not required
