The Lab Supervisor position is responsible for overseeing the daily operations of the sperm bank, ensuring the highest quality in laboratory equipment maintenance, processes, and shipping. This includes managing laboratory staff and handling tasks such as scheduling hours, managing time-off requests, resolving disputes, and overseeing hiring. The supervisor will schedule staff to minimize overtime.

Collaboration with the Tissue Bank Director is essential to create and achieve the production plan. Additionally, the Lab Supervisor will assist in investigating complaints and analyzing production metrics.

The supervisor is responsible for maintaining and updating all andrology-related SOPs and forms, submitting changes to the Tissue Bank Director, and ensuring donor testing is ordered according to established schedules, with results entered in the CryoBase. The supervisor will also authorize computer access for testing laboratories and coordinate remote testing for donors who have left the area, ensuring proper follow-up.

A weekly update on the laboratory's status and a monthly report will be provided to the Tissue Bank Director. The Lab Supervisor will consult, consent, and schedule client depositors and handle the evaluation and corrective actions for lab errors. Monitoring quality control and assurance, along with addressing any deficiencies, is also part of the supervisor's responsibilities.

Annual lab audits, both local and global, are conducted under the supervisor's responsibility, and audit responses and corrective actions will be discussed with the Tissue Bank Director before submission.

Training plays a vital role, and the Lab Supervisor will plan, oversee, and evaluate the progress of new employees to ensure quality standards are maintained. Remedial training, when necessary, will also be planned and assessed. All training activities must be properly documented.

The Lab Supervisor will coordinate continuing education for lab personnel and is expected to be an expert in all sperm bank processes. Although the role is primarily administrative, the Lab Supervisor must be prepared to provide laboratory coverage in unusual situations.

Primary Tasks:
  • Work with human resources to recruit, interview, select, hire, and employ an appropriate number of
    employees to staff the laboratory
    Coach, mentor and develop staff, including overseeing new employee onboarding and providing
    career development planning.
    Consciously create a workplace culture that is consistent with the overall organization's and that
    emphasizes the identify mission, vision, guiding principles, and values of the organization.
    Lead employees using a performance management and development process that provides an overall
    context and framework to encourage employee contribution and includes SMART goals - (Specific,
    Measurable, Attainable, Relevant, and Timely), feedback, and performance development planning.
    Maintain employee work schedules including assignments, job rotation, training, vacations, paid time
    of, cover for absenteeism, and overtime scheduling.
    Manage the overall operational, budgetary, and financial responsibilities and activities of the
    department.
    Counseling of donors and client depositors
    Responsible for overseeing all andrology laboratory functions including processing, storage, and
    shipping.
    Stock handling and specimen inventory maintenance
    Manage donor testing and assure results are recorded in CryoBase
    Review monthly Quality control for adherence to QC guidelines and ensure the quality of all aspects of
    the laboratory is being met.
    Adhere to laboratory's quality control policies; document all quality control activities, instrument and
    procedural calibrations and maintenance performed
    Assist the Tissue Bank Director with various projects
    Work with the production manager to ensure production goals are met for each donor specimen and
    identify ways to improve and meet production goals.
    Instructs laboratory personnel on handling of substandard donor specimens.
    Interprets results that may affect quality.
    General laboratory duties and maintenance including constructing, maintaining and operating
    standard laboratory equipment i.e. centrifuges, titrations, pipets, and fume hoods
    Maintaining traceability of specimens.
    Follow the laboratory established policies and procedures and ensure all personnel are performing
    established procedures
    Identify problems that may adversely affect test performance or reporting of test results and ensure
    that problems are corrected according to strict policies and procedures
    Maintain laboratory stock, inventory, and ordering supplies when necessary
    Maintain quality assurance and identify areas for QA improvement
    Preform other duties as assigned
  • This position is expected to be able to run the daily operations

The ideal candidate will have the following:

Education:
  • Bachelor's (Preferred); Associate's (Required)

Experience:
  • Clinical Laboratory Experience: 1 year (Preferred)
  • Laboratory Experience: 3 years (Preferred)
  • Previous Andrology experience: 1 Year (Preferred)
  • Previous Management Experience: 1 year (Preferred)

License/Certification:
  • Medical Technologist (Preferred)
  • Andrology Technologist (Preferred)
