Job Description
Job Title: Medical Laboratory Technician

Job Specialty: Medical Lab - General Testing

Job Duration: 13 weeks

Shift: Night Shift, 9:00 PM - 7:30 AM, 5x8 Hr

Guaranteed Hours: 40 hours per week

Experience: 9 years of related work experience preferred

License: Medical Laboratory Technician

Certifications: ASCP, AMT, or equivalent certification required within 6 months of hire

Must-Have:
- Associate Degree or completion of a U.S. Military 50-week course leading to specialty of Medical Laboratory Specialist or equivalent role
- ASCP MLT certification or equivalent
- Bachelors Degree in a Science field with applicable clinical experience

Job Description:
- Perform all levels of general testing within the analytical laboratory.
- Provide a high level of technical knowledge and apply it to department testing and clinical relevance.
- Function in a self-directed manner and exhibit complex problem-solving skills.
- Maintain a safe and clean working environment.
- Follow laboratory, hospital, and regulatory agency policies, procedures, and guidelines.
- Perform cytogenetic testing with competency according to established protocols.
- Generate and report results for accurate diagnoses and prognoses affecting patient care and management.
- Perform job duties efficiently and in an organized manner within the required timeframe.
- Promote and maintain a positive, team-oriented, and service-conscious environment contributing to department goals.
- Demonstrate knowledge and competency of laboratory computer systems.
- Ensure accurate and timely result reporting, including communication and documentation of critical results.
- Utilize critical thinking skills and exercise independent judgment to correlate and interpret data.
- Compile and review laboratory information system reports to ensure all samples are collected, processed, and tested in a timely manner.
- Assist in resolving unusual test orders with caregivers, reference labs, and pathology.
- Actively participate in the training and orientation of new associates and students.
- Lead responsibilities may be assigned in various areas.
- Participate in inspections and potential projects, teams, or committees.
- Attend department, laboratory, and hospital meetings and forums.
- Operate, maintain, and troubleshoot instruments with appropriate documentation.
- Complete required quality control and maintenance, recognizing variances and documenting corrective actions.
- Detect and document occurrences deviating from defined procedures.
- Acknowledge receipt of specimens in the laboratory information system.
- Receive specimens, assess priority, and ensure appropriate specimen identification and type.
- Order and process samples for both hospital-registered and outreach patients.
- Prepare and distribute samples for off-site testing, including necessary paperwork and/or computer documentation.
- Floating may be required within sixty miles of the original assignment location.
