Position Overview
This position is a presiding judge/official for live race meets in Illinois and is key to maintaining the integrity of racing. The Steward ensures the fairness of racing for the betting public and, in coordination with the State Veterinarians and other staff, oversees the general health of the horse population engaged in racing.
The ideal candidate will have a thorough understanding of the application of rules pertaining to violations concerning conduct and medication, applying the Horse Racing Act as it applies to the regulation of a pari-mutuel racing; anddetermining racing interference or lack thereof and taking appropriate corrective action when mandated by rules.

Position Overview

Essential Functions
- Monitor and regulate all live races for compliance.
- Adjudicate potential violations and report race activity.
- Coordinate with other race officials prior to the start of the daily race program.
- Work with staff to ensure equine health and compliance.
- Perform other duties as required.
Minimum Qualifications
- Minimum five years of experience in the horse racing industry with a minimum of 3 years as a racing official.
- Minimum two years of experience using spreadsheets and document creation software to create reports and simple spreadsheets for reporting, logging and tracking of information.
Preferred Qualifications
- College degree with horseracing or equine emphasis preferred.
- Minimum of one full race season using TrackManager and ARCI database.
- ROAP Level III or higher accreditation.
- Minimum of one full race season actively participating in administrative hearings.
- Minimum of five race seasons working in the Racing Office at a racetrack.
- Minimum of one full race meet of Steward experience judging live races under HISA/HIWU rules.
- Ability to recognize racing interference and knowledge of the process of remedying an infraction.
- Ability to evaluate potential licensees for suitability for licensure.
Employment Conditions
- Requires the ability to travel to facilities under jurisdiction of the Illinois Racing Board within the State of Illinois as well as Springfield. (Ownership of a vehicle is NOT a requirement.)
- Neither you or any member of your household has been issued a license by the Illinois Racing Board in the past 12 months.
- Neither you or any member of your household has, or has had, any economic or financial connection in the past 12 months to anyone (including an employer) who has been issued a license by the Illinois Racing Board during the past 12 months.
