Job Title: Registered Nurse (RN)
Job Specialty: Medical-Surgical
Job Duration: 13 weeks
Shift: 12-hour nights, weekends as scheduled
Guaranteed Hours: 48 hours per week
Experience: Minimum of 1 year
License: RN License
Certifications: Basic Life Support (BLS)
Must-Have:
- Must have 1 year of experience
- Will accept first-time travelers
Job Description:
- Nurse-to-patient ratios are 1:5-7 during the day and 1:6-8 at night.
- Unit includes 48 beds.
- Common patient diagnoses include pneumonia, UTI, AMS, GI bleed, alcohol withdrawal, falls/weakness.
- RNs are required to titrate certain drips such as heparin, bumex, and lasix but no cardiac drip titration.
- Charge nurses are present on each shift. On day shift, 2 charge nurses will take a patient assignment if only one is scheduled at night; they do not take an assignment.
- Nurse aides/patient care techs have an average ratio of 1:10-12. Duties include taking vitals, BGM's, EKG's, applying heart monitors, assisting with bathing, feeding, toileting, turning, and positioning.
- Respiratory therapists manage breathing treatments, inhalers, and respiratory equipment. RNs primarily monitor but do not perform checks.
- Monitor techs read and monitor telemetry. Nurses are not expected to interpret telemetry strips.
- Scheduling is managed by the manager, who considers requested time off. Flexible scheduling is expected for travelers.
- Weekend and holiday requirements include working every other weekend and being part of the holiday rotation.
- No call or standby requirement.
- RNs may be floated to any other medical-surgical, medical-surgical telemetry, or intermediate care unit for lower acuity patients.
- Dress code: RN - Navy blue scrubs, Patient Care Techs - Ceil blue, Secretaries - Black and pink.
- Orientation includes one day with an educator/computer system training and one day with a preceptor.
- Use of Cerner Corporation's Soarian charting system.
