Job Description
Job Title: Surgical Technician

Profession: Clinical Technician

Specialty: Adult Surgery

Duration: 13 weeks

Shift: Days Monday, Friday, Saturday, Sunday

Hours per Shift: Varies (6 a.m. - 7 p.m. on Monday and Friday, 6 a.m. - 3 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday)

Experience: At least 1 year Level 1 experience required

License: Current Basic Life Support issued by a recognized body required upon hire

Certifications: Graduation from an accredited school/program for Surgical Technicians OR 6 months of scrub tech experience

Must-Have: English proficiency (Speak, Read, Write)

Description:

Under supervision, provides technical assistance as a surgical technician in an operating room or similar facility.

Uses physicians' preference cards to assist in preparing for surgical procedures.

Prepares sterile field by opening instruments and supplies using sterile technique.

Performs surgical scrub prior to patient entering the operating room for all procedures.

Assists with preparing the operative field by helping the physician in draping the patient.

Ensures and preserves correct identification of operative specimens for lab analysis.

Obtains special equipment and ensures they are functional.

Handles instruments to aid surgeons efficiently while avoiding hazards to patients.

Observes surgical progress and provides additional instruments or supplies as needed.

Recognizes and corrects breaks in sterile technique when necessary.

Participates in sponge, needle, and instrument counts as directed.

Cleans or sterilizes contaminated instruments, equipment, and supplies.

Cleans operating room areas and disposes of soiled linen.

Assists in training new surgical technicians.

Performs a variety of clerical and technical patient care activities if assigned to specific units.

Performs other duties as assigned.

Knowledge of basic human anatomy and basic first-aid methods is essential.

Maintains effective working relationships.

Demonstrates knowledge and skills necessary for age-appropriate patient care.

Interprets patient data relative to age-specific needs.

Provides care for appropriate patient age groups including neonate, pediatric, adolescent, adult, and geriatric.
