Key Responsibilities:
Economic Development Leadership

In collaboration with the City Manager, you will spearhead efforts to cultivate a thriving local economy. You will lead innovative initiatives to ensure long-term economic sustainability, foster growth, and create a prosperous environment for businesses and residents alike. This is a chance to actively shape the future of Pacific Grove through dynamic, results-driven initiatives.

Examples of duties of this role that the successful candidate will need to be able to contribute quickly include:
  • Analysis and Research - Analyze economic data, demographics, and industry trends to identify opportunities and challenges for the city's economy and prepare reports summarizing the information.
  • Strategy and Program Development - Assist in the development and implementation of economic development strategies and programs. Identify and secure resources for projects.
  • Liaison and Communication: - Serve as a liaison between the city and businesses, community groups, and other stakeholders.Provide technical assistance and guidance to businesses.Market the city's economic development programs.
  • Project Management - Monitor and evaluate the performance of economic development programs and projects. Identify and resolve economic development impediments. Manage the City's Cannabis Business Program.


Communications and Public Information Officer (PIO)

As the City's communications manager, you will coordinate and implement the City of Pacific Grove's public information program to residents, businesses and visitors. crafting and executing communication strategies that enhance transparency, engage the community, and promote civic participation. You will work directly with the City Manager's Office and various departments to ensure clear, consistent, and compelling messages across all channels, from media relations to digital platforms. Your work will be essential in building trust and fostering a stronger connection between the City and its residents.

Examples of duties the successful candidate will need to perform include:
  • Content creation and management - Develop and produce engaging content for websites, social media, newsletters, press releases, and other publications. Create and implement communication strategies and plans.
  • Public relations - Build and maintain relationships with media outlets and community partners. Respond to inquiries and requests for information from the public. Participate in public events and meetings.
  • Internal communication - Communicate with city staff about important information and updates.

City Manager's Office Special Projects

You will take on special projects that have a direct impact on the City's overall strategy and success. These projects are often complex and citywide in scope, requiring collaboration across departments and coordination with intergovernmental agencies. Your ability to handle confidential and sensitive matters with discretion will be crucial as you represent the City Manager's Office in these high-priority initiatives. Compensation & Benefits
The annual salary range for this at-will, executive position is $94,057 - $123,073 plus a 3% management incentive (3% x base salary), placement in this range depends on qualifications and experience. A 3% cost of living adjustment is scheduled in July of this year*.

SUMMARY: Under general supervision, supervises and coordinates the programs, services, staff and activities of a major functional area; interprets laws, policies, rules, and agreements of the assigned program. Duties may vary based on the assignment area.

  • Researches technical issues and manages a variety of projects; collects, compiles, and analyzes data and information; develops recommendations, and prepares reports based on findings and results.

Typical Qualifications

Education, Training and Experience Guidelines:
Bachelor's Degree in Public Administration, Communications, Marketing, Business, or closely related field in the specified program; AND three years professional program experience, in the specified program; OR an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.

Supplemental Information

LICENSE AND CERTIFICATION REQUIREMENTS
A valid California State Driver's License in good standing is required to drive on City business/vehicles. Certification relating to assigned program area may be required.

CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT
  • Must be willing to attend evening or weekend meetings and/or critical events and activities, as appropriate.
  • This position has a critical role for the City in the preparation for, during, and in recovery from physical disasters and other emergency incidents.
  • Must take an Oath of Office.
  • As part of the selection process, all individuals provided with a preliminary offer of employment will be subject to a background investigation, including a criminal history check (primarily completed through the taking of fingerprints). An image of your fingerprints will be captured and sent to the California Department of Justice (DOJ) and the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI). OTHER CONSIDERATIONS
  • The City of Pacific Grove does not participate in Social Security.
  • The duration of the eligibility list is 14 months unless abolished by Human Resources. Eligibility lists established from this recruitment may be used for full-time, part-time and limited term positions.

Work is performed in a standard office environment.
