Primary Purpose:

Plans and designs electric substations with primary voltage levels ranging from 4kV to 500kV. Prepares or assists in the preparation of engineering designs, specifications, standards, studies, cost estimates, and technical recommendations for substation capital projects and tasks. Provides expertise for substation apparatus and equipment. Conducts engineering calculations and studies address issues for new substation facilities and modifications to existing substation facilities. Typically serves as a lead engineer, providing direction to lower-level engineers and leading complex or major engineering projects and studies

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Oversees and coordinates engineering and economic feasibility studies and cost analyses related to the design, construction, and permitting of electric substation facilities. Provides leadership and direction to designers, planners, analysts, and field personnel. Provides technical expertise to multiple project teams for evaluating and resolving engineering problems and designs related to electric substations. Gathers data, performs calculations, and prepares designs to develop technically sound conclusions, recommendations, and results. Follows up on implementation of recommendations and/or acceptance of conclusions to assess accuracy and completeness. Evaluates job requests to determine purpose, scope, and requirements, including the assessment of alternative methods, outside support needs, and compliance with company, City, State, and Regulatory Agency Codes.
  • Manages specific substation capital projects to ensure they meet standards, are completed on time, and stay within budget. Manages and coordinates all activities for successful task and project completion, including project scoping, consultant/contractor selection, cost estimates, budgeting, permitting, design, material procurement, and construction. Provides direction to contractors, consultants, company engineers, technical specialists, and the rest of the project team. Utilizes departmental project control systems to maintain budget and schedule and provide timely status reports.
  • Provides technical subject matter expertise for substation apparatus and equipment. Develops company standards, specifications, and procedures for the selection, design, application, and operation of equipment, components, and systems which meet long-term company needs with optimal economic considerations. Works with the company's supply management department and manufacturers to secure master agreements for substation equipment and support the procurement of substation apparatus and equipment for capital projects. Perform evaluations of manufacturing facilities and inspection of substation equipment during factory acceptance testing.
  • Stays abreast of the latest changes, trends, and technological advancements in the industry through conferences, seminars, continuing education, and literature. Interprets state and federal codes and industry standards. Participates in and provides technical input for the review of proposed changes in regulatory requirements affecting codes and standards. Recommends modifications to company standards, specifications, policies, and procedures that reflect regulatory changes.
  • Performs other duties as assigned (no more than 5% of duties).


Qualifications

Hybrid Schedule:

  • Although the schedule may vary, typically this will allow the employee to work onsite three days per week and remotely on the remaining workdays.
  • Must reside in Southern California or be willing to relocate upon hire.


Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's Degree in Engineering from an ABET accredited program or Professional Engineer (PE) certification in addition to five (5) years of engineering experience or an Advanced degree in Engineering from an ABET accredited program.
  • 8 years of related engineering experience.
  • Power System Engineering - A subfield of electrical engineering that deals with the generation, transmission, distribution, and utilization of electric power, and the electrical apparatus connected to such systems
  • Power System Protection Relaying - Implementing systems and devices to protect power systems from faults and disturbances, ensuring reliable operation.
  • Engineering Blueprint/Schematics Interpretation - Reading Engineering drawings and understanding the ideas and information that they are intended to communicate
  • Regulatory Compliance - Ensuring an organization's adherence to laws, regulations, guidelines and specifications relevant to its business processes.
  • Computer skills, including Microsoft Office applications.
  • Licensed as a Professional Engineer in the state of California.


Preferred Qualifications:

  • Master's Degree in Engineering.

The target for this position is an award of 15% of base salary and is based on individual and company performance for the plan year.
