The Opportunity

The Process / Controls Engineer - Global Product Management - Plant & Equipment Controls (Process Automation) is a skilled technical contributor with the capability to develop & design equipment & plant control of automated systems from concept through manufacturing. This individual will be part of a team that assesses the current offering of equipment controls, plant wide automation, & user interfaces across multiple product offerings driving the development of a best in-class standardized global platform to be utilized corporatewide.

This is an Engineered to Order (ETO) environment where the controls systems are sold to a client with equipment. Depending upon specific project requirements, this position will be tasked with driving concurrent turnkey equipment automation through both internal factory resources and at times external integrators.

This role will work on cost reduction/standardization projects and the development of a standardized Configure to Order (CTO) platform. All new product development for process controls and plantwide automation will be executed by this engineering team. It is essential that this individual possesses hands-on experience with process design, plantwide automation, equipment control panels, PLC Programing, and 3-phase electrical designs.

The Team

The role will report to the Senior Director, Processing and Automation.

Responsibilities
  • Develop PID / control theory / sequence of operation / collaborate with process system design teams to provide detailed control and electrical product information.
  • Support application engineering process automation quotation process while developing and transitioning to a CTO program
  • Design & development of the plant and equipment controls for liquid and dry fertilizer blending plants
  • PLC Programming including, Distributed Control, and Analog I/O
  • Programming capability of Variable Frequency Drives (VFD)
  • Research, evaluate, recommend, and design 'best-in-class' control systems and control panels based on market requirements
  • Define and develop feature rich HMI interfaces that reflect the system processes
  • Refine designs and offerings to transition from a 'one off' custom process to a standardized Configure to Order (CTO) offering while developing and maintaining an Engineered to Order (ETO) process for strategic accounts
  • Collaborating with Mechanical Engineering teams, service teams, and plant software teams to improve all existing offerings and develop the next generation of Plant and Equipment controls.
  • Maintain and support UL 508 Controls Panel Standards.
  • Strong collaboration with code development teams integrating physical controls hardware with application software
  • Partner with global functions of product management, marketing, sales, and technical experts in support of the technical requirements for the process automation product roadmap strategy development
  • Partner with technical resources at multiple locations and product families to develop the best-in-class automation systems to support our processing equipment in meeting market/customer requirements

Qualifications
  • Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering (BSEE) or Process Engineer (Mechanical or Chemical) with significant plant and equipment controls automation PLC coding experience from an accredited four-year program.
  • 2-5 years of hands-on process automation/control engineering experience including P&ID / Process Sequence Operation.
  • Must have good communication and collaboration skills to work with all levels of the organization. (e.g., electrical drafters, procurement, manufacturing, mechanical engineering teams, quotation team, manufacturing, & application engineering).
  • Strong aptitude and understanding of controls/automation systems with P&ID / Control Theory development
  • Adept at working with mechanical engineering teams to translate from system requirements to automation requirements driving control theory, equipment lists, and P&ID Documentation
  • Strong collaboration and interpersonal communication capability
  • Experience with industrial process automation controls (examples: oil & gas, food & beverage, water/wastewater, chemical etc. Agricultural: Feed, Fertilizer, Grains are a plus)
  • Attention to detail and ability to prioritize and manage time well
  • Self-directed and results-oriented
  • MS Office platform proficient including Visio & Project
  • Proficiency in electrical schematic / control panel development and associated CAD systems
  • PLC Programing Experience with one or more programming languages: Ladder Diagram (LD), Sequential Function Charts (SFC), Function Block Diagram (FBD), Structured Text (ST), & Instruction List (IL)
  • Ladder Diagram logic programing is a must
  • Experience with 3-phase power distribution design and implementation (Soft Starts, S-Curves, etc.)
  • Control panel design and architecture
  • UL 508 Control Panel Building Standards
  • Experience with data collection software and methods.
  • IEC / CE -European Control Panel Standards is a positive
  • Capability to design process automation & control systems including experience / understanding of Pneumatic Solenoid Valves, Pumping systems with VFD controls, Motor controls for material handling systems including soft-start applications, Automated weighing systems / load cells, Advanced PLC/HMI development capability, Distributed Control / Field Bus, RS232 and RS485.
