Description:
Special Needs Transportation Manager administers and supervises transportation services for students with disabilities. The incumbent of this position will be responsible for implementing federal, state, and local policies and procedures related to transporting students with disabilities. Special Needs Transportation Manager serves as the liaison to administrators, the Department of Special Education, and instructional staff members system-wide regarding students' transportation-related needs.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
- Works closely and collaboratively with the Department of Special Education to ensure the provision of transportation services for students with disabilities within comprehensive and special school settings.
- Represents the Student Transportation at Individualized Education Program (IEP) team meetings requiring extraordinary circumstances.
- Receives and responds to requests from principals and school-based staff members for support regarding the transportation of students with disabilities.
- Maintains professional relationships and works cooperatively with employees, the community, and other professionals.
- Maintains professional competence through individual and staff training, in-service educational activities, and self-selected professional growth activities.
- Attends and/or conducts staff meetings and participates on committees within area of responsibility.
- Responds to concerns and prepares correspondence to principals, parents, and community members regarding the provision of special education transportation services to ensure the safe and efficient transportation for special education students, including evaluating needs and requirements, explaining policies and procedures; and ensuring that accurate information is communicated to all involved parties.
- Works with transportation operations staff in developing bus routes and placing students on appropriate routes.
- Supervises the work of the special education routing staff and drivers.
- Participates in the planning and implementation of professional development activities for special needs bus personnel and supervisory staff.
- Works with Compliance Department to ensure district meets or resolves any OCR standards/complaints.
- Maintain CDL class B with P and S endorsements and meet all DOT drug test requirements.
- Drives bus routes and dispatches when needed.
- Performs other duties assigned.
PREFERRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND EXPERIENCE:
- Effective communication skills, both, verbal and written
- Flexibility, organization, decision-making and problem-solving skills.
- Interpersonal skills with diverse populations' in-person and on the telephone.
- Thorough knowledge of the streets and road system of the metropolitan area, including knowledge of outdoor education sites, local museums, and other ancillary sites for extracurricular activities.
- Ability to operate a computer, or to learn to operate a computer, concerning the routing of special needs students.
- Experience in routing and driving of special needs students.
- Ability to temporarily assume responsibility covering outside events during emergencies.
- Ability to perform quickly and efficiently a wide range of standard office clerical tasks.
REQUIREMENTS:
- Bachelors Degree and four (4) years supervisor experience OR
- Associates Degree and seven (7) years of supervisor experience OR
- High school diploma/equivalent and ten (10) years supervisor experience with six (6) of it in transportation setting.
- 3 years of experience with Special Education either school or transportation.
- Possession of a valid State driving license with clean driving record.
- Must obtain CDL Class B within 60 days of hire.
- First Aid/CPR certification obtained within 60 days of hire.
