IslandWood, a nonprofit organization located on a 250-acre campus at Bainbridge Island is hiring a Director of Finance. IslandWood's mission is to provide exceptional learning experiences to inspire lifelong environmental and community stewardship. The Director of Finance leads and oversees the effective execution of finance, accounting, and reporting functions, while supporting all programs and leadership teams with financial analysis, budgeting, and strategy. The Director manages day to day finances, develops accounting policies and procedures, and ensures accurate recording and documentation of all financial transactions in support of IslandWood's long term financial objectives and organizational strategic plan by providing analysis and recommendations supporting growth and financial sustainability. The Director applies strong problem-solving, communication, and leadership skills to influence decision-making supporting short-term and long-term objectives. The Director works in collaboration with other departments leaders and staff across the organization.

Duties/Responsibilities:
Strategic Financial Leadership
- Act as a business partner to COO, CEO and leadership team providing insights and recommendations. Align financial goals with business strategies to ensure long term financial viability and sustainability.
- Lead IslandWood's financial accounting and reporting function, tracking/monitoring organizational progress, provide an analysis of organizational financial status, and help develop a plan of action for improvements towards organizational financial sustainability objectives.
- Lead the finance and accounting function by ensuring accuracy of all accounts, ledgers, and reporting in compliance with appropriate US GAAP standards and regulatory requirements.
- Ensure the integrity of our financial management systems and data; ensures integrity of Sage-Intacct as a core system of record for all financial transactions.
- Analyze and present financial reports to leadership team in an accurate and timely manner; clearly collage and submit financial reporting materials for all donor segments and oversee all financial program and grants accounting. Prepares for and attends Board meetings and provides insights into financial results and trends in support of Treasurer and COO.
- Implement a robust contracts management and financial management/ reporting system; ensure that the contract billing and collection schedule is adhered to, and that financial data and cash flow are steady to support operational needs.
- Partner with and work across departments responsible for revenue generation and fundraising to strategize, monitor and analyze earned and contributed revenue and endowment funds. Partners with all departments to monitor and manage expenses offering insights and ideas on efficiencies and expense management strategies.
- Work across departments to ensure all internal and external financial information is accurate and the financial information in all systems is accurate and timely.
- Responsible for annual budgeting and planning process in collaboration with the Chief Operations Officer (COO) and Chief Executive Officer (CEO), while supporting/training budget holders regarding annual budgets and budget management system.
Management
- Assess and identify organizational improvements to provide data driven financial analysis including development of key metrics. Make recommendations for related technical and procedural changes.
- Maintain internal controls and safeguards for receipt of revenue and actual expenditures.
- Manage and ensure proper and timely filing of tax returns, sales tax, and state registrations.
- Manage organizational cash flow forecasting.
- Continuously collaborate with directors and leadership to assess the financial efficacy of program operations and establish finance systems to support program operations. Builds financial literacy, decision- making and acumen across the broader team.
- Manage and track the performance of invested assets in keeping with policies and investment guidelines in conjunction with the COO, CEO, IslandWood Finance, and Investment Committees.
- Lead and manage complex annual audit, 990-T, and 990 filings; prepare all information and materials as required.
- Lead, mentor, and develop direct reports.
Other Duties:
- Supports the COO in managing all banking and financial institution relationships.
- In COO's absence, acts as staff liaison to Board Finance and Investments Committees.
- Prepares Finance and Investment committee meetings minutes.
Required Qualifications:
- Degree in accounting; CPA highly desired; MBA a bonus.
- 6-10 years non-profit accounting experience; including 3 years supervising a finance team.
- Experience working in a complex organizational environments with competing priorities. Understands, advises on and navigates related tradeoffs.
- Excellent written and oral communication skills; ability to communicate effectively and project a professional image when giving and taking information in writing, in person, and over the phone.
- Extensive computer skills, including the use of accounting software (i.e., Sage Intacct), Excel, Word, and CRM database systems like Salesforce.
- Some experience with university/college financial aid and budgeting is desired.
