Orchid is seeking an Underwriting Manager to join our growing team.

The Underwriting Manager establishes a best-in-class standard of underwriting excellence. They are responsible for individual underwriter development and team results, including production and quality. This position oversees underwriting performance and adherence to carrier guidelines. The Underwriting Manager will help identify and implement best practices to support their team and the business. They are accountable for assisting Orchid in achieving premium goals, maintaining profitability goals, and driving efficiency.

How you will Contribute:
  • Coordinate with the Director of Underwriting to develop strategies to meet new business production, retention, and underwriting profitability goals.
  • Assist in developing and maintaining Orchid Underwriting service standards and best practices.
  • Ensure underwriting activities adhere to carrier guidelines and Orchid Underwriting best practices.
  • Lead an Underwriting team in all aspects of service, quality, and production.
  • Collaborates with IT to manage User Acceptance Testing (UAT), ensuring the underwriting team validates business functionalities and system improvements to meet operational needs and enhance business performance.
  • Set and measure specific production and quality goals for new business underwriting, renewal underwriting, and inspection underwriting.
  • Provides phone/chat coverage support as deemed necessary to meet client service levels, while monitoring and managing service level standards, call volume, and overall performance to ensure service level goals.
  • Effectively coordinate with other areas within Orchid such as the Senior Leadership, Product, and Sales/Marking teams to support achieving Orchid's business objectives.
  • Help identify and implement improved processes and drive efficiency to reduce expenses.
  • Gather, maintain, and share current market knowledge to assist Orchid in developing effective product and pricing strategies.
  • Support teammates through guidance, mentorship, training, and development in their endeavors to meet their professional goals.
  • Foster a collaborative and supportive team environment, encouraging professional growth and development.


Licenses & Certifications:
  • Possess or acquire and maintain a FL 2-20 insurance license or the equivalent as required by FL state. Non-resident Florida teammates must possess or acquire and maintain the non-Florida resident state equivalent Property & Casualty license.


Skills & Experience to be Successful:

  • Minimum of 5 years of comprehensive underwriting experience (including evaluating new and renewal business), with at least two years in a leadership role a plus. Highly developed written/oral communication skills, emotional intelligence, and leadership acumen.
  • A passion for service to agents, policyholders, carrier partners, and teammates.
  • Ability to effectively utilize, support, and assist teammates with the technologies required to perform essential job duties (as a user).
  • Proven ability to coach, motivate, and lead a team to achieve high performance levels.
  • Able to effectively analyze workflows and processes, with a continual goal of increased effectiveness and efficiency.
  • Demonstrated experience in identifying opportunities for improvement and implementing best practices to enhance efficiency and effectiveness.

  • Some travel may be required.

Physical Requirements Necessary on a Regular Basis:
  • Manual dexterity, arm and upper body range of motion sufficient for use of a keyboard, mouse and telephone 7-8 hours per day.
  • Speech and hearing sufficient for in-person and telephone communication 7-8 hours per day.
  • Vision sufficient for use of a computer monitor.
  • Ability to sit at a desk 7-8 hours per day.
