What You Will Do
Nuclear Criticality Safety - Weapons Support and Plutonium Infrastructure Integration (NCS-WS) is seeking a group leader within the Nuclear Criticality Safety (NCS) Division. Specific duties include criticality hazard identification, criticality analysis, selection of controls, and development of associated criticality documents including criticality safety evaluations and criticality safety limit approvals. This individual will help us implement our vision of a fully integrated, collaborative, diverse and inclusive NCS Division where all staff members are equally valued, where collaboration and mutual support are the norm, and where communication and a sense of shared outcome enable us to make the most impactful contributions to LANL's objectives. The Group Leader will be a member of NCS Division Leadership Team, embrace our values, and support our vision in implementing our strategy to ensure the success of staff members, safely and securely and with environmental awareness.
The Group Leader will serve as the NCS authority to manage work as the primary interface on fissionable material operations in support of weapons production and plutonium infrastructure integration. The weapons production mission is focused ramping up operations to achieve rate production, and the design and installation of new gloveboxes is key to enabling this mission. To enable this expanding enterprise, the NCS-WS Group Leader will interface with Pit Technologies Division and the Associate Laboratory Directorate for Plutonium Infrastructure to help maintain existing operations, and to understand needed improvements, monitor progress to assure customer requirements are met, and both short-term and long-term goals are attained. The Group Leader will establish and grow working relationships with Facility Managers, Program Managers, Line Managers, Supervisors, and workers. The Group Leader will develop NCS staff to qualify and support these various facilities and will help track work performance and report progress at Division, Group, and meetings with customers. The Group Leader will make group member assignments to assessment teams, including NCS assessments of facility programs, management self-assessments and readiness assessments for fissionable material operations. In the bigger picture, the Group Leader will consult with the NCS Division Leader on mission, vision, strategic and tactical planning for the group work portfolio in support of the LANL mission.

- Record of leading technical personnel in support of nuclear facilities including operations, maintenance, engineering, safety basis, or projects to establish and continuously improve reliable facility operations.
- Demonstrated success in effectively interfacing with all levels of stakeholders such as contractor management, NNSA/DOE staff, DNFSB staff and board members, and occasionally members of the public.
- Demonstrated capability in successfully developing internal and external customer relationships achieving a high degree of customer satisfaction. Expertise in negotiation with customers and support organizations and resolving conflicts.
- Qualified as a Criticality Safety Analyst in a program consistent with ANSI/ANS 8.26-2007(R2016), Criticality Safety Engineer Training and Qualification Program
- Demonstrated ability to oversee and perform important elements of the criticality safety program including design reviews, criticality safety evaluations, fissionable material operational reviews, and potentiation process deviation response.
- Must have knowledge/experience and proficiency in DOE orders and ANSI/ANS standards on criticality safety.
- Development, mentoring and retainment of new NCS analysts
- Leadership experience while achieving the requirements above.
