Role and Responsibilities
The candidate will apply their technical knowledge and experience in materials (Metals and Plastics) to:
Guide decisions related to materials selection for customer parts
Lead and facilitate R&D for new materials in the powder bed fusion process
Perform evaluation and testing of materials
Facilitate technical aspects of outsourced heat treating and testing
Manage internal projects to in-source heat treating, destructive testing, and non-destructive testing capabilities
Perform new product introduction through customer qualification processes by defining and optimizing processes before parts enter production.
The ideal candidate has experience in a production environment with selection and evaluation of materials for additive manufacturing. Interpersonal skills are critical for properly communicating with customers and internal stakeholders.
The candidate will be expected to evaluate new materials, perform failure analysis, provide technical support internally and externally, and provide innovative solutions to meet company objectives.
Primary Tasks:
Provide expert guidance on selection of materials, heat treating, post-processing, and testing options for customer parts. This includes regular meetings with customers.
Identify and propose new materials to increase our capabilities and meet industry trends
Prescribe testing scope for material characterization and allowables development
Select and manage material testing and evaluation (density, microscopy, destructive testing, NDT, failure analysis, chemical analysis, and others)
Review and approve material certifications and test reports from suppliers
Continually Improve our post-processing methods through new technology, methods, or applications
Write material and process-related procedures to incorporate into the Quality Management System
Develop internal or external communications in the form of white papers, slide presentations, webinars, and live presentations related to our materials, process, and R&D
Represent Cumberland Additive in standardization body meetings, consortiums, trade shows, and with accreditation bodies.
Perform hands-on testing and evaluation using destructive testing frames, chemistry analyzers, microscopy equipment, and others
Lead advanced materials engineering programs (material/product/process development)
Lead statistical process control initiatives
Lead operational and supply chain cost reduction and optimization projects
Provide guidance on facility improvements, equipment selection, and in-sourcing
Guide the purchase of materials and applications of coatings and surface finishes
Create and maintain work instructions related to materials, test methods, and post-processing.
Perform procedural and hands-on support of vacuum furnace operation.
Secondary Tasks, as assigned:
Engineering and Manufacturing
Maintain a general working knowledge of powder bed fusion AM machines (SLM, GE Arcam, EOS, etc.)
Assess part characteristics for manufacturability, material selection, equipment selection, and design optimization
Create build files, layouts, and use cost estimation models
Prepare bills of material and routings
Lead and provide technical direction for technicians
Provide "hands-on" support with printing and inspection equipment
Customer Programs
Assist in assembling quotations in response to customer RFQ's
Lead customer projects as the assigned project engineer
Lead and/or participate in regular customer meetings
Monitor and manage project costs in respect to the established budget
Anticipate problems and concerns relevant to project management and provide timely solutions
Coordinate document submittals, approvals, distribution, and revision control
Initiate purchase requisitions for tools, fixtures, operational equipment, and outside services
Maintain a strong working relationship with the customer
Perform completion of project closeout activities inclusive of lessons learned sessions
Occasional travel may be required to support project or program goals
Quality
Perform failure analysis on builds, parts, and output from post-processing
Serve on the Material Review Board, dispositioning non-conforming material
Evaluate product and provide acceptance or rejection determination
Qualifications and Education Requirements
Position title and compensation may range from Engineer I up to Senior Engineer based on qualifications and experience. Candidates shall meet the minimum requirements stated below.
B.S or higher in Materials Science, Metallurgical Engineering, Chemical Engineering or related fields
Two or more years of experience in metallurgical materials research, testing and applications
Minimum 1 year experience in additive manufacturing (powder bed fusion preferred, but not required).
Experience with the following software preferred: CAD (SolidWorks, Catia, etc.), Materialise Magics, Microsoft Office

Level I: Degreed Engineer with some material science and additive manufacturing experience (professional or through formal studies). Developing skills in materials selection, post-processing and part evaluation for 3D printing. Shows understanding of appropriate material selection, heat treating and post-processing steps, and material evaluation methods.
Level II: Degreed Engineer with 2+ years of material science and AM experience and/or master's degree in engineering discipline. Possesses skills and previous experience in processing 3D printed components (printing, de-powdering, heat treating, finishing, testing, and others). Shows considerable skill in materials selection, post-processing and part evaluation for 3D printing, while also exhibiting a consistently timely and thoughtful approach to problem solving. Brings wisdom from previous experience to the team, works autonomously, and supports operational and business development objectives successfully by driving continuous improvement and lean manufacturing initiatives.
Level III: Degreed Engineer with 5+ years of material science AM Engineering experience. A master's degree in AM or equivalent may count for up to 2 years of experience. Possesses substantial skill and previous experience in processing 3D printed components (printing, de-powdering, heat treating, finishing, testing, and others). Shows substantial skill in materials selection, post-processing and part evaluation for 3D printing, while also exhibiting a consistently timely and thoughtful approach to problem solving. Brings wisdom from previous experience to the team, works autonomously, and supports operational and business development objectives successfully by proposing, initiating, and managing continuous improvement and lean manufacturing projects.
Senior: Degreed Engineer with 10+ years of material science AM Engineering experience. A master's degree in AM or equivalent may count for up to 2 years of experience. Possesses extensive skill and previous experience in processing 3D printed components (printing, de-powdering, heat treating, finishing, testing, and others). Shows extensive skill in materials selection, post-processing and part evaluation for 3D printing, while also exhibiting a consistently timely and thoughtful approach to problem solving. Brings wisdom from previous experience to the team, works autonomously, and champions operational and business development objectives by strategizing, formulating, initiating, and managing continuous improvement and lean manufacturing projects. Maintains awareness of technical industry trends and best practices and uses that knowledge to ideate and drive continuous improvement for the engineering team. Develops strategic plans for engineering-related projects to increase capability and technical breadth within the organization. Serves as a mentor to engineers at lower levels.
