The Population and Community Health Bureau (PCHB) is a Public Health Bureau within the Public Health Division, Center for Healthy and Safe Communities of the New Mexico Department of Health. The mission of PCHB is to partner with populations, communities, organizations, and systems to create health equity where New Mexicans live, learn, work and play.

Why does the job exist?

The position will assist the Bureau Chief with the day to day operations, such as both human and fiscal resources for the bureau. The incumbent will actively participate in strategic planning, and legislative bill analyses. The Incumbent will provide public health leadership for staff to engage in core public health functions and provide essential public health services in the context of the Department of Health (DOH) Strategic Plan, the State Assessment & the State Improvement Plan (SHIP), to assist in achieving the DOH and the Public Health Division (Division) mission, vision, goals, objectives, and strategic directions. Operationalization of the bureau mission, vision, and values to improve health equity for all New Mexicans.

How does it get done?

The position will support the development of legislative priorities, training and resources for the bureau; Facilitate collaboration and partnerships with local and state health and human services delivery systems; Educate/inform policy makers, providers, and health system leaders on policies related to health equity and the social determinants of health, and environmental/system approaches that help improve population health.

Bureau staff, community partners, national partners, citizens of New Mexico and organizations within the Department of Health

Ideal Candidate

1.) Preferred experience in the areas of Public Health, Health Systems, and Chronic Disease Prevention, 2.) at least three (3) years of experience managing a public health or health services program and 3.) at least three (3) years of experience managing budgets and/or contractual instruments.

Minimum Qualification

A Bachelor's degree in any field of study from an accredited college or university and eight (8) years of professional level experience with a light strategic impact directly related to the purpose of the position defined by the agency at the time of recruitment. Any combination of education from an accredited college or university and/or direct experience in this occupation totaling twelve (12) years may substitute for the required education and experience. A hiring agency will designate a portion of the required experience to include management, supervisory and/or specialized experience. Any required licensure, certification or registration shall be defined at the time of recruitment and will be in addition to the above requirements.

Employment Requirements

Must possess and maintain a valid Driver's License. Must possess and maintain a current Defensive Driving Course Certificate from the State of New Mexico or must pass and receive Defensive Driving Course Certification within six (6) months of date of hire as a condition of continued employment.

Working Conditions

Work is performed in an office setting with exposure to Visual/Video Display Terminal (VDT) and extensive personal computer
and phone usage. In-state and out-of state travel is required. Ability to lift up to 40 pounds.
