HNTB is seeking a highly motivated and talented individual to join our growing Environmental Team as part of the NY Planning & Mobility department. We are looking for a senior environmental planner with strong technical skills in natural resources and permitting and who is ready to be challenged and support environmental planning, documentation and permitting tasks for major transportation clients.
This position includes providing oversight and guidance to younger professionals and involves a mixture of office and field duties including but not limited to environmental reviews, wetland delineation, ecology/habitat surveys, mitigation site suitability evaluation, biological assessments, construction/post-construction monitoring, NEPA documentation, New York State Environmental Quality Review Act (SEQR) and environmental permit preparation (federal and state).

The approximate pay range for New York is $123,854.48 - $242,151.39. Please note that the pay range provided is a good faith estimate for the position at the time of posting. Actual compensation will be dependent on factors, including but not limited to, the individual's qualifications, experience, knowledge, skills, and abilities as well as physical work location within the state.

What You'll Do:
- Under minimal direction, performs a variety of more highly complex professional planning, environmental planning, landscape architecture and urban design project responsibilities, and leads technical tasks.
- Writes and/or reviews major sections of and leads production of plans, studies, reports, and environmental documents for projects. Coordinates and synthesizes the contributions of others.
- Leads, prepares, and reviews graphics, technical reports, work plans, scopes of work, fee proposals, and responses to Request for Proposals for projects. Prepares and reviews budgets, invoicing, and billing.
- Leads public and stakeholder engagement and presents information to the community.
- Provides guidance and mentors staff.
- Leads coordination with clients, sub-consultants, and in-house personnel on a regular basis to complete assigned tasks.
- Recommends process and system improvements that result in greater efficiencies, enhanced capacities, and improved service delivery.
- Supports department managers and office leadership with strategic planning, staffing/training, and other special projects.
- May serve as project manager or task lead.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
What You'll Need:
- Bachelor's Degree in Landscape Architecture, Planning, Environmental Planning, Urban Design, Architecture, Engineering, Urban Planning, Geography, or related field and 10 years related experience, or
- Master's Degree in Landscape Architecture, Planning, Environmental Planning, Urban Design, Architecture, Engineering, Urban Planning, Geography, or related field and 9 yrs of relevant experience
What You'll Bring:
- Experience preparing permit matrices detailing the required permits for federal/state and local environmental requirements.
- Leading the strategy and preparation of Clean Water Act (CWA) Section 404/401 permitting, Section 10 of the Rivers of the Harbors and other federal, state, and local permits.
- Experience performing ecology/habitat surveys and conducting field work including wetland delineation to support permitting and the environmental review process.
- Experience conducting the necessary analyses for permit applications and technical environmental reports.
- Experience supporting the preparation of permit applications and coordination with the reviewing agencies.
- Excellent project organizational and management skills.
- Highly collaborative, positive and proactive communication skills.
- Provides consultation on research approaches, evaluation methodologies, and conclusions to make recommendations to less experienced staff or clients.
- Oversees the preparation of reports and provides consultation on structure and content, including conducting quality reviews. Presents and defends reports to audiences.
- Manages client meetings and oversees preparation or meeting materials without oversight from others.
What We Prefer:
- Master's degree in Urban Planning or related field.
- Professional Engineer (PE), American Institute of Certified Planner (AICP), Professional Transportation Planner (PTP), Certified Environmental Professional (CEP), Envision, Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design Accredited Professional (LEED AP)
