This job is posted as HYBRID, and requires up to 3 days a week from our Dearborn, MI office.
We are seeking a skilled Thermal Systems Engineer (TSE) to focus on the optimization of vehicle thermal performance. This role involves conducting detailed analyses of front-end airflow, powertrain cooling, component thermal management as well as recommending cost effective design solutions to resolve identified issues while balancing styling, aerodynamic performance, weight and packaging constraints. The engineer will collaborate with cross-functional teams to ensure all thermal requirements are met and components function within their operational temperature limits.

We are seeking a skilled Thermal Systems Engineer (TSE) to focus on the optimization of vehicle thermal performance. This role involves conducting detailed analyses of front-end airflow, powertrain cooling, component thermal management as well as recommending cost effective design solutions to resolve identified issues while balancing styling, aerodynamic performance, weight and packaging constraints. The engineer will collaborate with cross-functional teams to ensure all thermal requirements are met and components function within their operational temperature limits.
Responsibilities
- Perform detailed analyses of vehicle front-end airflow to optimize cooling performance and sealing efficiency.
- Evaluate powertrain cooling stack performance (radiators, condensers, additional heat exchangers) to ensure efficient heat rejection and adherence to thermal performance targets.
- Ensure a thorough understanding of component thermal properties and their operational environments.
- Collaborate with Thermal CAE engineers to ensure CAE simulations are carried out to assess initial designs and alternative design proposals.
- Evaluate thermal profiles within the engine bay and underbody to detect and address critical heat-related issues.
- Collaborate with Studio, Powertrain, Chassis, Electrical, and Body Engineering teams to ensure integration of thermal considerations into product development.
- Verify component design compliance with established thermal performance criteria.
- Prepare and present comprehensive thermal analysis reports and recommendations to stakeholders.
- Maintain effective communication and collaboration with cross-functional teams throughout the product development cycle.
Qualifications
Basic Qualifications:
- Bachelor's in Mechanical Engineering, Automotive Engineering, or a related field.
- 2+ years experience with thermodynamics, heat transfer, and fluid dynamics.
- Proven experience in thermal systems development, preferably within the automotive industry.
- Skills in interpreting complex vehicle CAE data (CFD/Thermal) to extract insights about system behaviors and anomalies.
- Working knowledge of thermal and flow measurement equipment to collect data and validate thermal system performance
- Familiarity with vehicle propulsion system operation and vehicle CAN data to diagnose thermal performance issues
- Excellent problem solving, communication and collaboration skills.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Master's in Mechanical Engineering with a focus on thermo-fluids or energy systems
- Proficiency with simulation tools such as ANSYS, STAR-CCM+, TAI THERM, ENSIGHT or similar CAE software.
- Experience working with multi-disciplinary teams in an automotive product development environment.
