Job Description
NYC Health + Hospitals Nurse Practitioners (NPs) provide medical care across the lifespan. This includes diagnosing and treating common conditions, educating patients in developing skills and knowledge to control chronic illness, promoting preventive health through lifestyle modification and recommending preventive services. NPs order and review diagnostic tests and ensure access to timely and appropriate levels of care (e.g. same day appointments). NPs coordinate patients' care across various locations of service (e.g. emergency, primary, specialty, dental, mental health, substance use, inpatient and at home care).
The focus of this role is supporting Surgical and Medical Sub-specialty providers to provide timely access for patients seeking standardized surgical or specialty care evaluation and treatment.
Duties & Responsibilities
Complete Prior Authorizations: Process prior authorizations for medications and supplies, imaging studies, and procedures at the direction of the medical and surgical specialty providers
Provide Medical Services: After an appropriate period of training in each specialty, the NP will provide medical care in one or more specialty services as per departmental access needs (Asthma clinic, headache clinic, etc.):
Conducts history and physical examinations
Analyzes laboratory results and follows-up on abnormal values
Assesses and treats medical concerns according to established standards of care
Formulates and coordinates a plan of care management for patients as required to assist patients to a desired state of wellness
Completes patient correspondence (i.e. forms or letters)
Maintain accuracy and completeness of all patient records Performance Improvement & Citizenship
Actively participates in departmental/facility/network in-services, meetings and trainings
Actively participates in the Medical Board/Department Committee meetings
Participates in Quality Improvement activities; develop and implement special projects (e.g. Quality Assurance Studies
Maintains patient safety and infection control guidelines; follows established infection control protocols
Follows corporate and hospital regulations, policies and procedures
Maintains a professional working relationship with other health care professionals
Operates equipment and performs job related duties in a safe manner; supervises maintenance of equipment and supplies
Recognizes safety hazards and initiates appropriate action to eliminate hazards and prevent recurrences
Performs other duties as assigned within the scope of practice
Minimum Qualifications
1. Valid New York State license and current registration to practice as a Registered Professional Nurse issued by the New York State Education Department (NYSED); and
2. Current certification as a Nurse Practitioner issued by the NYSED; and
3. Current certificate issued by the NYSED to prescribe medication; and
4. Holds, or obtains through facility orientation, a valid and current certification in Basic Life Support (BLS) through the American Heart Association (AHA).
5. Two (2) years of satisfactory experience as a Nurse Practitioner, or two (2) years of satisfactory experience as a Registered Professional Nurse, eighteen (18) months of which must be as a Nurse Practitioner preferred.
For Assignment to Nurse Practitioner (Primary Care/Behavioral Health)
1. In addition to meeting the qualification requirements of Nurse Practitioner, must be assigned to a Primary Care or Psychiatric/Behavioral Health setting
