Position Overview

The VP Operations Business Controls supports Loans, Deposits, Electronic Payments, ATM/Cards, and Treasury Support (collectively "Operations") teams by designing and executing quality review plans for key controls within Operations to mitigate operational process risks. This role partners with Operations Management to ensure processes are effectively designed and operating as intended, supports remediation of testing issues, and facilitates process, procedure, and control revisions in collaboration with the appropriate stakeholders and the Director of Operations. Additionally, this role is responsible for enhancing risk frameworks, integrating automation, and supporting business continuity initiatives.

Essential Job Functions
  • Develop, implement, and enhance risk and control frameworks to ensure effective governance and operational integrity.
  • Review and assess Internal Controls over Financial Reporting (ICFR) narratives, associated processes, and procedures to ensure controls are functioning effectively.
  • Maintain a robust control environment by identifying, assessing, and mitigating operational risks across business functions.
  • Monitor the effectiveness of implemented operational controls through regular reviews, data analysis, and key risk indicator (KRI) tracking to ensure controls operate as intended.
  • Identify, assess, and oversee resolution of internal control gaps related to operational functions, collaborating with stakeholders to implement corrective actions.
  • Serve as a liaison with regulatory agencies and external auditors, ensuring timely and comprehensive responses to regulatory requests and audit findings.
  • Promote a risk-aware culture through monitoring, reporting, and issue management activities.
  • Identify, escalate, and manage control deficiencies, including tracking remediation plans and ensuring timely resolution.
  • Collaborate with operations control owners, control operators, and internal audit teams to facilitate control assessments and address audit findings.
  • Investigate and assist in root cause analysis for ineffective controls and recommend improvements.
  • Provide expertise and analysis to stakeholders regarding issue identification, assessment, control, monitoring, testing, and reporting.
  • Partner with control owners to implement course corrections within operational areas when control breakdowns occur.
  • Oversight and testing of any interim operational controls associated with M&A activity.
  • Educate Operations department leaders, control owners, and control operators on the importance of ICFRs, narratives, and effective control environments.
  • Oversee all Operations department Compliance and Audit observations and recommendations by participating in monthly meetings, assisting with audit responses, and work paper review prior to delivering to Audit/Compliance to clear finding.
  • Identify opportunities to automate control processes, integrate risk technology solutions, and leverage data analytics for proactive risk management.
  • Prepare and present quality testing status reports for Operations leadership and key stakeholders.
  • Stay informed of industry best practices, regulatory changes, and emerging risks to enhance operational compliance.


Minimum Requirements

Bachelor's degree in related area of study and five or more years of financial services industry experience with a focus on Internal Audit, Business Controls, Risk Management, or similar functions; or equivalent combination of education and experience.

  • Manage multiple projects in a fast-paced environment.
  • Proficiency with a PC including Microsoft Office.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and collaborative approach.

Preferred, but not required
  • Bank conversion-related experience.
  • Jack Henry system experience.

Location Details

This position is considered a hybrid role. With management approval, an incumbent may work a combination of remote and onsite work to perform the regular responsibilities of the role. Actual schedule requirements may vary based upon business needs.

Compensation & Benefits

Base pay: $94,000 - $130,000

Old Second is committed to fair and equitable pay practices. Pay is dependent upon the pay range and the incumbent's knowledge, skills and experience.

Officer Bonus Eligible: Eligible to participate in the Annual Officer Incentive plan with a target bonus up to 10% of base salary based various performance components.
