Job Description
The University of Maryland School of Medicine seeks a physician of unique vision, enthusiasm, and experience as Chief of the Division of Hospitalist and General Internal Medicine. The ideal candidate for the leadership role is an academic physician with expertise in applying new knowledge to the practice of clinical medicine and a track record of scholarship. The Chief will be a nationally respected academic internist with demonstrated clinical, translational, and/or basic research accomplishments. Because the next Chief will be the leader of a large academic and clinical enterprise, a candidate's experience in leading effective programs is critically important. The Chief must exhibit the qualities required to be a successful and compassionate leader in a complex, matrixed environment, including working collaboratively across various organizations and effectively promoting the Division with community providers and leaders, donors, and hospital executives.

The Division Chief will be responsible for full program development and oversight, including the Division's clinical, educational, and research program activities. Improvement of clinical operations, mentoring junior faculty and fellows, support of quality improvement initiatives, integrating hospitalist and general internal medicine services among the hospitals and ambulatory sites, clinical growth, and continued research development are notable priorities.

Expected faculty rank for this position will be Associate Professor or higher, however, final rank, tenure status and salary will be commensurate with selected candidate's qualifications and experience.
The expected salary range for Associate Professors is 268,131 (min) and $485,962 (max). The referenced salary range reflects base pay, which is based on faculty rank and years in rank. This salary range does not include all components of the departmental faculty compensation program or pay from participation in departmental variable compensation programs. Exceptional reputation as a general internal medicine physician and/or hospitalist with outstanding patient outcomes. Leadership, compassionate and humanistic approaches to patient care and trainee development as well as participation in national or international societies are a plus.

Accomplished administrative leadership experience in a complex academic institution. Knowledge of financial complexities, payer models, and associated reimbursement in providing high-quality, cost-effective specialty healthcare. - Ensure the highest quality of patient care is delivered
- Champion high reliability and support to performance improvement (PI) initiatives.
- Understand and work with the University of Maryland Medical System to ensure patient care is delivered in the most appropriate location.
- Oversee the Department of Medicine bi-campus alignment to ensure efficient, high-quality care.
- Regularly monitor all data related to the Department's hospital-based services, including efficiency, productivity, quality, safety, and patient experience
- Partner with other key departments to identify opportunities for expanded access to primary and preventive care to reduce hospitalizations and readmissions.
- Promote the development and utilization of clinical practice guidelines in collaborate with the UMMC Chief & Vice President of Quality & Patient Safety.
- Assure the mentorship faculty with the goals of career development and progression toward promotion.
- Support trainee development by fostering educational opportunities, mentorship, and performance improvement.
- Support, develop, and provide leadership for hospitalist and general internal medicine initiatives and innovation within the department, school, and the healthcare system, including adopting AI capabilities.
- Optimize the integration of an Advance Practice Provider model within the Division to ensure high-quality care is delivered and all providers work to the top of the license.
- Promote national visibility of the Division's patient care, education research, other scholarly/academic activities, and community outreach programs.
- Consistent with state and national benchmarks, develop performance metrics for faculty to promote awareness and alignment of patient, FPI, and UMMC quality, safety, efficiency, patient experience, and value measures to drive optimal results.
- Promote the Departmental priorities of interdisciplinary program development, physician-scientist career development, diversity of its workforce, and integrated program development with its affiliates.
- Partner with key leadership at UMMC and SOM to anticipate the expanded growth of strategic programs to ensure safest health outcomes.
- Recruit, retain, and academically develop faculty in the Division in an equitable and inclusive manner.
- Administer the Division in a fiscally responsible manner within university policies.
- Personally participate in regularly scheduled meetings of the Department of Medicine's Division Heads and other ad hoc Departmental meetings.
