Position Summary

Under the supervision of a Police Sergeant, this position performs general police work in the protection of life and property, crime prevention, enforcement of laws, ordinances, accidents, and community policing and related programs. The Savage Police Department seeks a dedicated public service candidate with high ethical standards and a strong work ethic.
Lateral Officers will be considered and are encouraged to apply.

Lateral applicants must have successfully completed a probationary period as a sworn law enforcement officer with a U.S. agency.
Lateral applicants can expect an accelerated hiring process. There will be a command-level interview followed by a background. Upon completion of the background, there will be a medical and psychological assessment.
Lateral applicants can expect (upon completing our lateral field training program) to take part in our wellness program focusing on Mind, Body & Soul, be eligible to participate in our on-duty workout program, and when working night receive night differential of .50 cents per hour. Once off probation laterals that have at least 3 years of experience are eligible to apply for special assignments (Investigations, SWAT, SRO, K-9, Instructor, Drug Task Force, Traffic Safety Officer).

Minimum Qualifications
Bachelor's Degree in Criminal Justice or related field, previous law enforcement experience, and current certification in CPR and First Aid is highly desirable.

Essential Functions and Responsibilities
- Respond on or off duty to police calls and emergencies as directed; provides assistance as needed.
- Properly investigate complaints, maintains order in disputes, and handles community outreach duties as assigned.
- Patrol assigned area by vehicle or foot to deter and detect unlawful activities; observe and detect traffic violations, enforce vehicle, and traffic laws check for suspicious activities, actively seek wanted persons or property, and operate vehicle in emergency mode when necessary.
- Apprehend violators and perform investigation work.
- Arrest and process suspects, documents evidence, completes detailed reports, appears and/or testifies in court as required, and serves subpoenas as directed.
- Ability to utilize de-escalation tactics, which may take the form of scene management, team tactics, and/or individual engagement.
- Tactically face threatening situations and be prepared to use deadly force when justified.
- Monitor and ensure proper flow of traffic. Direct traffic when necessary and report hazardous conditions.
- Investigate and prepare traffic accident reports. Enforces parking ordinances, reports abandoned or damaged vehicles, and assists stranded motorists. Request checks on vehicle registrations, warrants, and firearms; issue tickets, citations, and tags for illegal violations.
- Operate and maintain communication equipment tactical tools, vehicles and equipment, office electronics, issued equipment/uniforms and reports damage, loss, or improperly operating equipment to immediate supervisor.
- Maintain effective community relations. Includes answering questions, referrals to proper law enforcement agencies, provides directions, assistance as needed, and participate in community outreach activities. Maintain relationships with other governmental agencies and schools for coordination of investigations and other activities.
- Maintain personal character, ethics, skills proficiency, and physical conditioning.
- Stay abreast of developments in the field of law enforcement and changes in related laws and ordinances.
- Plan investigation of assigned cases; coordinate investigations with supervisors and patrol as necessary to develop information, determine needs, and schedule specific investigation steps.
- Obtain and process physical evidence; handle or arrange for the processing of a crime scene, follow proper procedures in making arrangements for lab testing and the proper control and documentation of all evidence processing.
- Participate in the apprehension of suspects; work with other members of the department as appropriate; arrange for warrants and subpoenas as required.
- Develop cases for prosecution; build and maintain an accurate and complete case file through reports of action and findings; may recommend disposition of cases and work with the prosecuting attorney's office; make court appearances as required.
- Maintain outside contacts as needed for intelligence information, including contacts with other law enforcement agencies, community resources, and others as required.
Minimum Qualifications
- Associates Degree from an accredited college; or any equivalent combination of experience and training which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform the work.
- At least 21 years of age.
- United States Citizen.
- Possess and maintain a Peace Officer license or eligibility to be licensed through the State of Minnesota P.O.S.T. Board by date of hire.
- Must possess or have the ability to obtain a valid and unrestricted Minnesota Driver's License.
- Must possess and maintain a physical condition satisfactory to fulfill the duties of the position as determined by a physician of the City's choice.
- Must be able to pass a thorough background investigation, psychological evaluation, medical examination, and drug test.
