The mission of the Drainage Bureau is to provide technical expertise to the New Mexico Department of Transportation (NMDOT) Design Regions and Districts for all drainage related issues. We provide drainage engineering services for NMDOT facilities statewide as needed to support program goals and project requirements.

Why does the job exist?

This purpose of this position will be the management of the Drainage Bureau engineering staff to accomplish the Bureau's mission to provide technical expertise to the NMDOT Design Regions and Districts for all drainage related issues.

How does it get done?

Key responsibilities of this position will include field investigations, hydrologic and hydraulic analyses, providing conceptual alternatives and recommendations, preparation of drainage reports, and development of construction plans as needed to support the NMDOT State Transportation Improvement Program (STIP) projects and program needs.

Who are the customers?

The Drainage Bureau supports Project Development Engineers (PDE) in all three (3) Design Regions and the six (6) Districts with drainage engineering for STIP and maintenance projects to ensure the safety of residents of New Mexico and the traveling public.

Ideal Candidate

The ideal candidate will have preferred education, licensure, and/or experience in the following areas:

* Professional Engineer (PE) License with a concentration in Drainage Engineering as certified by the New Mexico Board of Licensure for Professional Engineers and Professional Surveyors (NMBLPEPS).
* Masters degree in hydraulic engineering or a related field.
* Six (6) years of civil engineering to include significant drainage design experience.
* Managing or supervising a team of engineers and technicians.

Minimum Qualification

Bachelor of Science Degree from an accredited college or university in a relevant engineering discipline with licensure and five (5) years of engineering experience, one (1) of which must be as a Licensed Professional Engineer. Any combination of education from an accredited college or university in a related field and/or direct experience in this occupation totaling nine (9) years may substitute for the required education and experience. Must be certified by the NMBLPEPS as a Licensed Professional Engineer in good standing within six (6) months of hire.

Employment Requirements

Must possess and maintain a valid Driver's License. Must possess and maintain a current Defensive Driving Course certificate from the State of New Mexico or must pass and receive a Defensive Driving Course certificate as a condition of continued employment.

Employment requires successful completion of a pre-employment physical exam and is conditional pending results.

Business Reference check and Driver's License verification are required, and employment is conditional pending results.

Working Conditions

Work is primarily performed in an office setting, exposure to Visual/Video Display terminal (VDT) and extensive personal computer and telephone usage with extended periods of sitting. Must be able to lift 25 lbs. Travel throughout the state and occasional out of state travel may be required.
