The Traffic Technical Support is a bureau in the Engineering Support Division of the New Mexico Department of Transportation (NMDOT). Traffic Technical Support (TTS) provides and reviews permanent signing and striping, roadway lighting, and signalization submittals for construction plans. TTS also is responsible for researching, creating and maintaining standard drawings and specifications for the above topics as well as roadside hardware and construction signing. Additionally, TTS performs and reviews multiple types of traffic studies and reports including but not limited to capacity studies, safety studies, speed studies, gap studies, etc. TTS is also responsible for maintenance agreements between NMDOT and local agencies for traffic signal systems and roadway lighting systems.

This position exists to aid Traffic Technical Support in supporting NMDOT Design Regions and Districts in design, operation and maintenance activities.

How does it get done?

The key responsibilities of this position will include providing and reviewing permanent signing and striping, roadway lighting, and signalization plans for the design process. Additionally, this position will aid in developing standard drawings, details and specifications in those areas as well as construction signing. The position is also responsible for traffic analysis and studies in support of Districts and Regions.

The primary customers for this job are the Districts, Design Regions and the public.

Ideal Candidate

The ideal candidate will have preferred education, licensure, and/or experience in the following areas:

* Professional Engineer (PE) License with a concentration in Traffic Engineering as certified by the New Mexico Board of Licensure for Professional Engineers and Professional Surveyors (NMBLPEPS).
* Working knowledge of the Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices (MUTCD).
* Knowledge of AutoCad.
* Some expertise in the Microsoft Office Suite.

Minimum Qualification

Bachelor of Science degree from an accredited college or university in a relevant engineering discipline with licensure and four (4) years of engineering experience. Any combination of education from an accredited college or university in a related field and/or direct experience in this occupation totaling eight (8) years may substitute for the required education and experience. Must be licensed by the NMBLPEPS as a Licensed Professional Engineer in good standing within six (6) months of hire.

Employment Requirements

Must possess and maintain a valid Driver's License. Must possess and maintain a current Defensive Driving Course certificate from the State of New Mexico or must pass and receive a Defensive Driving Course certificate as a condition of continued employment.

Employment requires successful completion of a pre-employment physical exam and is conditional pending results.

Business Reference check and Driver's License verification are required, and employment is conditional pending results.

Working Conditions

Work is performed in an office setting with exposure to Visual/Video Display Terminal (VDT) and extensive personal computer and phone usage. Field work is also required in varying weather conditions-hot or cold, humidity, wind, rain, and snow; exposure to sunlight, dust, concrete powder, and environmental allergens; exposure to moving mechanical parts; high, precarious places, toxic fumes/chemicals and/or airborne particles; high volume traffic; insects and reptiles, loud noises, confined spaces, and stressful situations; interaction with public, local, county, school, and city officials by phone and in person; work is performed in the field, monthly assignments that require travel and extended overnight stays away from post of duty along with extended hours and occasional travel. Sitting/Standing, bending, squatting, climbing, reaching, kneeling, and crawling for extended periods of time may be required. Ability to lift up to 50 lbs.
