ABOUT THE POSITION
The County of Riverside - Riverside University Health System-Medical Center (RUHS-MC) is currently seeking candidates for a Registered Nurse III-MC/CHC position in Trauma Services. The most competitive candidates will have at least three (3) years of recent (within the last five years) full-time Registered Nurse (RN) experience in one or more of these specialties: Emergency Rooms (ER), Critical Care Units (including Intensive Care Units - ICU), Surgical Intensive Care Units (SICU), or Critical Care Transport. This posting may also be used to fill future openings that become available within the next 90 days.

Work Schedule: The available work schedule consists of three 12-hour night shifts per week, from 6:00 PM to 6:30 AM, with rotating weekends required.

The Trauma Nurse Essential Duties consist of the following below:
-Provide direct patient care of trauma patients in coordination with Trauma Surgeons
-Assist with invasive procedures such as rapid infusers, chest tubes, EVDs, arterial lines, and blood transfusions
-Ensure trauma quality measures are met during trauma resuscitations
-Transport of trauma patients for radiology, Interventional Radiology, or operating room
-Comanage Massive Transfusion Protocols with Physicians
-Round on inpatient traumas and assist with throughput
-Resuscitations in OR in cooperation with Anesthesia
-Ensure accuracy and completion of charting for trauma resuscitations
-Provide trauma education throughout facility
-Performance and/or quality improvement of trauma care
-Attend meetings and committees as required
-Keep current on trauma resuscitation literature and knowledge

EXAMPLES OF ESSENTIAL DUTIES
Assess, plan, organize, and provide nursing care to assigned patients in accordance with physician instructions; make preliminary observations of patients and prepare patients for medical treatment.
Assist physicians in administering treatments and in performing medical examinations, diagnostic tests and surgical operations.
Administer prescribed treatment and medications, including dispensing, as ordered to patients; chart treatment of patients; record and report significant changes in condition and general progress of patients.
Counsel and advise patients, families and significant others regarding special medical problems and/or proper healthcare methods.
Prepare and maintain concise and complete records and reports; instruct patients in carrying out physician's orders; transcribe physician's orders to working records.
Provide orientation and training to new staff, residents, medical students, Regional Occupational Program (ROP) participants and nursing students.
Participate in quality assurance reviews; act as a team leader or relief charge nurse.
Assign and monitor, the work of subordinate nursing personnel; participate in committee activities; identify staff training needs.
Triage patients by reviewing admission charts and merging patients into the appropriate patient assignment or clinic flow when appropriate.
Testify in court as to client's mental and physical condition.
Coordinate and monitor patients through the hospitalization process utilizing physicians, primary care nurses and third-party payors to maintain quality care and fiscal responsibility.
Review the post hospital care plan with the patient,/family establishing a contact regarding timeframes and responsibilities; follow care plan through patient discharge.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education: Successful completion of the education required to obtain a valid license to practice as a Registered Nurse in the State of California. (A bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university in nursing or a health-related field may be required for some positions.)

Experience: This position requires a minimum of three years of recent (within the last five years) full-time Registered Nurse experience in one of the following: Emergency Rooms (ER), Critical Care Units (including Intensive Care Units), Surgical Intensive Care Units, or Critical Care Transport.

License: Must possess and maintain a current valid license to practice as a Registered Nurse in the State of California or valid out of state license with authorization to work in California.

Certificate Requirements:
  • Basic Life Support (BLS), Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS), and Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) certifications from the American Heart Association are required and NIHSS.
  • Additionally, candidates must hold one of the following trauma care certifications: Trauma Nurse Core Course (TNCC) or Advanced Trauma Care for Nurses (ATCN).

Knowledge of: Current principles, techniques and procedures used in professional nursing; medical terminology and patient care routine appropriate to clinical setting; medical instruments and equipment; the uses and effects of medicines and narcotics; community resources available to provide patient care and follow-up; federal, state and local laws and regulations governing professional aspects of nursing; identification of potential discharge needs; payor source documentation requirements and governmental regulations affecting reimbursement.

Ability to: Perform the full range of nursing duties and responsibilities in a patient care setting; plan and organize nursing plans for patients; prepare and maintain concise and complete records and reports; establish and maintain effective working relationships with physicians, patients and fellow employees; secure the cooperation of employees to work effectively together; assist in the instruction of entry-level nurses and ancillary personnel; keep abreast of developments in area of nursing specialization; evaluate the medical records of hospital admissions; make recommendations regarding continued stay necessity; identify discharge needs.

MISCELLANEOUS RETIREMENT: County of Riverside has three retirement Tiers through the California Public Employees' Retirement System (CalPERS).
  • Tier I (Classic Member - Formula 3% @ 60): Applicable to current and former County of Riverside local miscellaneous employees hired prior to 08/24/2012 and did not withdraw CalPERS contributions. The employee contribution is eight (8%) percent.
  • Tier II (Classic Member - Formula 2% @ 60): Applicable to local miscellaneous employees 1) hired after 08/23/2012 through 12/31/2012; 2) Previously employed with another CalPERS contracting public agency or a reciprocal retirement system, with a break in service of less than six months between the separation date with the previous employer and the appointment date with the County of Riverside. The employee contribution is seven (7%) percent.
  • Tier III (PEPRA New Member - Formula 2% @ 62): Applicable to CalPERS local miscellaneous new members hired on or after the implementation of the Public Employees' Pension Reform Act of 2013 (PEPRA) which took effect January 1, 2013. Effective July 1, 2023 employee contributions are 7.25% and will increase to 7.75% effective July 1, 2024.

A new member is defined as any of the following:
  • A new hire who enters CalPERS membership for the first time on or after January 1, 2013, and who has no prior membership in any California Public Retirement System.

    DEFERRED COMPENSATION: Voluntary employee contribution with a choice between two 457 deferred compensation plan options.

    VACATION ACCRUAL (Bi-Weekly Accrual):

    0 < 3 year = 80 Hours (10 Days)

    4 < 9 years = 120 Hours (15 Days)

    10 or more years = 160 Hours (20 Days)

    Maximum Vacation leave accumulation is 480 hours.

    SICK LEAVE: Four (4) hours Sick Leave accrual per pay period with unlimited accrual.

    HOLIDAYS: Normally 12 paid holidays per year.

    BEREAVEMENT LEAVE: Allowed 5 days (3 days are County paid; 2 additional days can be taken from accrued Sick Leave balance).

    BASIC LIFE INSURANCE: Equal to one times annual base salary not to exceed $50,000 of term life coverage. Premiums are paid by the County. Additional Supplemental Life plan is available for employee purchase.

    DISABILITY: Short-term Disability benefit pays up to a maximum of $461.54 weekly, payable up to a maximum of 52 weeks.

    POST RETIREMENT MEDICAL CONTRIBUTION: A monthly contribution is made by the County towards retiree health insurance offered through the County as governed by the applicable SEIU Memorandum of Understanding.
