What You Will Do

The Accelerator Operations and Technology Division (AOT) is seeking a Deputy Group Leader (R&D Manager 3) for the Radio Frequency Engineering (RFE) group. The AOT-RFE Deputy Group Leader will serve as part of the AOT management team to provide leadership for the Division.

AOT maintains, operates, and upgrades all accelerator system used at the Los Alamos Neutron Science Center (LANSCE) complex. These consist of two 750-keV Cockcroft-Walton-based injector systems (H+ and H- systems), a 201.25-MHz drift tube linear accelerator utilizing high-power diacrode tubes, an 805-MHz coupled cavity linac utilizing klystrons as the primary power source, a proton storage ring, and roughly a kilometer of beam transport lines that feed beam to the five independent research programs. The AOT-RFE group is principally responsible for all RF systems used to operate the various machines and beam transport lines.

The successful candidate will assist the Group Leader in providing strong technical and managerial leadership to the AOT RF Engineering Group. Furthermore, the Deputy Group Leader is expected to nurture and develop technical and professional excellence within the group and to work with group members to develop skills that contribute to their professional development. The position will entail solving problems (technical, fiscal, project, managerial), performing analyses needed to generate solutions, and interacting with all levels of personnel both internal and external to the Group, Division and Laboratory. Work time will be split roughly equally between management and actual technical work. The Deputy Group Leader is eligible to participate in the Triad Incentive Compensation Program.

What You Need

Minimum Job Requirements:
  • Demonstrated relevant leadership experience.
  • Demonstrated success in the direct management of personnel and programs.
  • Experience with identifying potential operational and/or project risks, development of risk mitigation strategies, corrective actions, recovery plans and closure of issues.
  • Demonstrated technical knowledge of and relevant experience in most of the group's core capabilities to include the high-power RF engineering and low-level RF and operations support.
  • Experience in operation and upgrade of RF systems at a large-scale facility similar in complexity found at an accelerator facility.
  • Demonstrated expertise with electrical safety procedures, processes and methods and experience in implementing and successfully following appropriate safety procedures.
  • Demonstrated successful record of effective interpersonal verbal and written communication skills.

Education/Experience: Position requires a bachelor's degree in science or engineering from an accredited institution and 5 years related experience; or, an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation. A Master's or Ph.D. in electrical engineering or a related field is preferred.

Desired Qualifications:
  • Experience in technical knowledge of pulsed power systems and DC power systems.
  • Experience in executing work and projects in a formality of operations compliant facility.
  • Experience mentoring and/or developing staff and students.
  • Active DOE Q clearance or the ability to obtain a Q clearance.

Work Environment

Work Location: The work location for this position is onsite and located in Los Alamos, NM. All work locations are at the discretion of management.

Position commitment: Regular appointment employees are required to serve a period of continuous service in their current position in order to be eligible to apply for posted jobs throughout the Laboratory. If an employee has not served the time required, they may only apply for Laboratory jobs with the documented approval of their Division Leader. The position commitment for this position is 1 year.

Additional Details

Directive 206.2 - Employment with Triad requires a favorable decision by NNSA indicating employee is suitable under NNSA Supplemental Directive 206.2. Please note that this requirement applies only to citizens of the United States. Foreign nationals are subject to a similar requirement under DOE Order 142.3A.

No Clearance: Position does not require a security clearance. Selected candidates will be subject to drug testing and other pre-employment background checks.

New-Employment Drug Test: The Laboratory requires successful applicants to complete a new-employment drug test and maintains a substance abuse policy that includes random drug testing. Although New Mexico and other states have legalized the use of marijuana, use and possession of marijuana remain illegal under federal law. A positive drug test for marijuana will result in termination of employment, even if the use was pre-offer.

Regular position:Term status Laboratory employees applying for regular-status positions are converted to regular status.

The annual distribution is prorated based on the number of months in the eligible position.
