Essential Duties

1. Participates in the planning, conceiving, designing and implementation of highly specialized state of the art instrumentation equipment and apparatus for a multi-faceted research project 2. Solves engineering and design problems to ensure that equipment meets the objective of the study 3. Develops reports and proposals for research project outlining machinery available, direction of the design, and development of new instrumentation. 4. Determines available resources such as electrical and mechanical components and equipment. 5. Develops cost and time estimates for specific equipment design. Ensures time and cost estimates are met. 6. Supervises and monitors work of professionals and solicits consulting work from outside labs 7. Manages quality control of work performed on research projects. 8. Teaches research support theories and design. 9. May perform other duties as assigned.

Required Education and Experience

Bachelor's Degree in a related field and five years of related experience in a research development facility or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Position Focus:

This position is for a core scientist specializing in crystallography within the Structural Science Facility (SSF) at the Chemical and Biophysical Instrumentation Center (CBIC). Under the supervision of the SSF Director, the core scientist will manage technical and scientific tasks essential to the facility's operations. The SSF houses shared instrumentation, with core areas including X-ray and electron diffraction, scattering, and imaging.

The role involves maintaining X-ray crystallography hardware for data collection, including rotating anode X-ray generators, microfocus sealed tubes, and cryostream cooling systems, along with the maintenance and oversight of SAXS, PXRD, and MicroCT instruments. Responsibilities include calibrating instruments, monitoring performance, diagnosing and resolving issues, training researchers, creating documentation, managing data, and aiding facility staff with various instrument-related tasks.

Duties also entail managing laboratory supplies, ensuring adequate stock levels, re-ordering parts and consumables as needed, and upholding lab safety protocols. Additionally, the core scientist will collaborate with the core research team and faculty members on research, reports, presentations, and publications to support the SSF and CBIC's training and research missions.

Preferred Education, Experience and Skills:

Familiarity with a wide range of laboratory techniques, equipment and software. Good interpersonal and communication skills to facilitate working with faculty and students to assist them in operating instruments and interpreting data.

Required Skill/Ability 2:

Strong communication skills and ability to effectively train users and staff on proper procedures and methods for using X-ray and other equipment.

Required Skill/Ability 3:

Ability to solve X-ray crystal structures and conduct routine sample preparations and tests, perform data recording and analysis, and maintain accurate records and documentation.

Required Skill/Ability 5:

Mechanical and electronic skills relevant to maintenance, repair and modification of scientific instruments. Computer skills for instrument operation and data analysis.
