Job Description
PURPOSE OF POSITION
Assist the Surgical Attending in providing care to patients referred to the Surgery Department.

SUMMARY OF DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Summary of Duties & Responsibilities:
The Overnight and Weekend Surgical Physician Assistant (PA) is responsible for providing comprehensive surgical care to inpatient surgical subspecialty patients and responding to Emergency Department (ED) consultations during overnight and weekend shifts. This role requires a highly skilled and autonomous PA with extensive surgical knowledge and experience, capable of managing complex patient cases and working effectively in a fast-paced environment.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
Inpatient Care:
o Provide overnight and weekend coverage for all surgical subspecialties (e.g., General Surgery, Orthopedics, Urology, ENT, Vascular).
o Conduct patient rounds, assess post-operative patients, and manage their care.
o Order and interpret diagnostic tests (e.g., labs, imaging).
o Perform minor procedures (e.g., wound care, suture removal, drain management, Foley catheter insertion/removal).
o Manage acute and chronic medical conditions in surgical patients.
o Document patient encounters and maintain accurate medical records.
o Respond to and manage patient emergencies.
ED Consultations:
o Respond promptly to surgical consultation requests from the ED.
o Evaluate patients in the ED, perform physical examinations, and order appropriate diagnostic tests.
o Provide timely and accurate assessments and recommendations to the ED physicians.
o Perform initial management of surgical emergencies in the ED.
o Facilitate patient transfers and admissions to the surgical service.
Collaboration and Communication:
o Collaborate effectively with surgeons, residents, nurses, and other healthcare professionals.
o Communicate clearly and concisely with patients and their families.
o Provide timely updates to the on-call surgeons regarding patient status and management.
o Participate in handoff procedures to ensure continuity of care.
Other Responsibilities:
o Maintain current knowledge of surgical procedures, techniques, and best practices.
o Adhere to hospital policies and procedures.
o Participate in quality improvement initiatives.
o Perform other duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
1. Current New York State registration as a Physician Assistant; or
2. Current limited permit issued by New York State to practice as a Physician Assistant.
