Job Title: Surgical Technologist

Job Specialty: Surgical

Shift: 10-hour day shift, Days-0700-1530, 1100-1930, 5x8 Hr

Guaranteed Hours: 40.00 per week

Experience: Minimum of one year of experience in a surgical setting preferred; experience in a specialty field preferred

License: Required for regulatory compliance in specific regions

Certifications: Certification in Surgical Technology from the National Board of Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting (NBTSTSA) or Certification as a Tech in Surgery from the National Center for Competency Testing (NCCT). Basic Life Support from the American Heart Association is required.

Must-Have: Basic computer skills. Proficiency in English (Read, Write, Speak)

Job Description:

- The Surgical Technologist works under the supervision of the surgeon and the registered nurse.
- Assists the surgical team during operative procedures by arranging and inventorying the sterile set-up of instruments, equipment, and supplies for surgical cases and passing items to surgeons and nurses as needed.
- Assists in preparing and moving patients and sterilizing and cleaning instruments, equipment, and rooms.
- Utilizes physician preference card to identify supplies and equipment needed for scheduled surgical or emergency procedures and updates preference cards with any necessary changes.
- Sets up a sterile table with instruments, supplies, equipment, and medications/solutions needed for the procedure.
- Prepares solutions and medications, labels them properly, and reports amounts used for charting.
- Prepares back table and mayo stand, anticipating the needs of the surgeon using the surgeon's preference card.
- Provides supplies or equipment upon request for the surgeon, nurses, and/or anesthesiologist.
- Assists with draping the sterile field, drapes, and covers operating and instrument tables.
- Performs appropriate counts with the circulator prior to the operation, before the incision is closed, and as needed.
- Delivers surgical specimens/cultures from the operative field to the circulating nurse.
- Maintains the highest standard of sterile technique during procedures by checking package integrity, indicators, and opening procedures.
- Prepares and sterilizes supplies and equipment used in surgical procedures.
- Reviews and replaces supplies in the surgical case following a procedure and discards expired medications per protocol.
- Assists with terminal cleaning of the operating room and preps room for the next patient.
- Holds retractors or instruments, sponges or suctions the operative site, applies electrocautery to clamps on bleeders, cuts suture material, connects drains to suction apparatus, and applies dressings to a wound.
- Ability to provide on-call coverage outside of standard scheduled hours per department and/or facility policy.
- Effectively communicates with the surgeon and nursing staff.
- Anticipates possible problems or complications that could arise during cases and adjusts quickly for emergent cases that change workflow.
- Performs all duties in a conscientious, courteous, and caring manner to maintain positive customer relations.
- Maintains efficiency under stress and irregular working hours.
- Adheres to department procedures and acceptable protocols.
- Applies knowledge of the dress code related to Standard Precautions and consistently wears appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE).
- Reports any life safety issues, environmental concerns, or process deviations to the immediate supervisor.
- Participates in quality improvement, evidence-based practice, and research activities.
- Participates in professional and program development by attending department in-services, meetings, and by sharing professional expertise to enhance the quality of patient care and staff development. Seeks specialty service learning opportunities and growth for advancement. Assists with the education of new staff and students.
- Demonstrates effective time management and is proactive in prioritizing workload and meeting productivity requirements.
- Adapts to rapidly changing technologies, policies, regulations, census, and staffing through priority setting and flexibility.

Floating may be required to any location within sixty miles of the original assignment location or identified float zone. Float assignments may include duties outside of original assignment job requirements in accordance with policy.
