As a Senior Engineer in the Reliability Modeling team, you will apply your leadership, collaboration skills, and technical expertise to effectively and efficiently identify risks to the reliability and security of the Western Interconnection's BPS.
As a Senior Engineer, you will be a leader in WECC's Reliability Modeling department. The Reliability Modeling department provides power system models for use by both WECC and by stakeholders in the Western Interconnection to perform reliability assessments. You will also apply your subject matter expertise from an interconnection-wide perspective to examine ways to create high-quality data and models that are valuable to reliability and that best meet the needs of stakeholders in the Western Interconnection.

The base salary range for this full-time position is $127,900 - $159,900 + discretionary pay + benefits. Our salary ranges are determined by role and level. The range displayed on each job posting reflects the minimum and mid-point for the position across all locations. Within the range, individual pay is determined by additional factors, including job-related skills, experience, and relevant education or training. As a Senior Engineer, you will be a leader in WECC's Reliability Modeling department. You will also apply your subject matter expertise from an interconnection-wide perspective to examine ways to create high-quality data and models that are valuable to reliability and that best meet the needs of stakeholders in the Western Interconnection.
You will-
- Serve as WECC's resident expert in electromagnetic transient (EMT) models and analyses.
- Lead the implementation of WECC's EMT strategy to establish model collection and maintenance processes.
- Lead the development and implementation of stakeholder partnerships to advance EMT model development and analysis in the Western Interconnection. You will propose and lead the development of reliability models based on emerging issues and trends.
- Propose improvements to enhance productivity and efficiency within reliability modeling and assessments functional areas.
- Provide technical leadership and partnership with industry groups such as national labs; regulators; federal, state, and provincial government organizations; non-governmental organizations; and academia to advance WECC's models and identify potential reliability risks and treatment options.
- Identify the need for, and support the development of, new software tools and processes to assess data and power system reliability.
- Deliver clear, concise presentations to a variety of technical and non-technical audiences.
- Support and provide technical leadership to WECC and NERC committees, task forces, and work groups.
- Engage stakeholders to identify and assess reliability challenges in the short-term to long-term time frames.
- Provide technical expertise and support for other activities at WECC (e.g., standards development, oversight, event analysis, situation awareness).
- Mentor other engineers and analysts and work with management to find opportunities for others to take part in industry initiatives.
- Advocate for reliability in industry groups, bringing back vital information for WECC's strategic decision-making.
- Monitor, develop, and improve applications used in the major functional areas of expertise.
- Ensure timely and accurate completion of functional area work products.
- Make decisions in complex and potentially sensitive situations that reflect WECC's independence, partnership, and reliability-centered perspective.
- Have the ability to work with a broad spectrum of individuals with diverse interests when resolving problems.
You will enjoy this role if you-
- Hold a bachelor's degree in engineering, statistics, economics, or a related technical field, or have an equivalent combination of education and professional work experience. An advanced degree in engineering, statistics, economics, or business administration is preferred.
- Have at least eight years of experience in power system analysis. Also have a history of identifying emerging reliability risks and leading reliability-related analyses.
- Have extensive experience using power system tools such as: PSCAD, EMTP, ETRAN, GE PSLF, Siemens PSS/E, and PowerWorld.
- Have a record of developing power system models and developing technical reports with a strong understanding of reliability risks to the Bulk Power System.
- Possess strong interpersonal skills and the ability to work effectively in a highly dynamic team environment.
- Have the ability to work with a wide range of people, including other departments as well as industry stakeholder and member groups with differing interests.
- Have excellent spoken and written communication skills.
- Have proven decision-making and problem-solving skills.
- Possess the ability to adapt presentations to meet the needs of different audiences.
- Are excited to advocate for reliability in industry groups, bringing back vital information for WECC's strategic decision-making.
- Possess high levels of self-motivation, initiative, intellectual curiosity, and accountability.
- Are able and eager to serve as a knowledge leader, sharing expertise with staff and other departments at WECC.
