As a Staff Engineer in the Reliability Modeling team, you will apply your leadership, collaboration skills, and technical expertise to effectively and efficiently identify risks to the reliability and security of the Western Interconnection's BPS.
As a Staff Engineer, you will be a leader in WECC's Reliability Modeling department. The Reliability Modeling department provides power system models for use by both WECC and by stakeholders in the Western Interconnection to perform reliability assessments. You will also apply your subject matter expertise from an interconnection-wide perspective to examine ways to create high quality data and models that are valuable to reliability and that best meet the needs of stakeholders in the Western Interconnection.

The base salary range for this full-time position is $96,700 - $120,900 + discretionary pay + benefits. Our salary ranges are determined by role and level. The range displayed on each job posting reflects the minimum and mid-point for the position across all locations. Within the range, individual pay is determined by additional factors, including job-related skills, experience, and relevant education or training. As a Staff Engineer, you will be a leader in WECC's Reliability Modeling department. You will also apply your subject matter expertise from an interconnection-wide perspective to examine ways to create high quality data and models that are valuable to reliability and that best meet the needs of stakeholders in the Western Interconnection.
You will-
- Develop interconnection-wide power system models in power flow and production cost model software.
- Continuously seek out ways to improve WECC's data and model quality with the goal of advancing WECC's ability to identify potential reliability risks and treatment options.
- Collaborate with teammates to develop and implement strategies and methods for developing high quality datasets and improving model quality.
- Work closely with WECC stakeholders to develop data requests, requirements for models, data quality metrics, and reliability assessments.
- Engage with software vendors to ensure tools, methods, and software can meet the reliability needs of the Western Interconnection.
- Coordinate and collaborate with other departments on various tasks and activities.
- Support and facilitate stakeholder meetings of WECC and NERC committees, task forces, work groups, and applicable stakeholder groups; provide technical support for and coordinate with these groups.
You will enjoy this role if you-
- Hold a bachelor's degree in engineering, statistics, economics, or a related technical field, or have an equivalent combination of education and professional work experience.
- Have three to eight years of experience in areas such as production cost modeling, resource adequacy modeling, resource planning, power flow analysis, stability analysis, or capacity expansion modeling.
- Have experience using power system, production cost, or resource adequacy tools such as Astrape SERVM, Energy Exemplar Plexos, ABB GridView, GE MARS, or GE PSLF, Siemens PSS/E, PowerWorld, PowerGem TARA.
- Understand reliability risks related to power system and resource planning.
- Possess strong interpersonal skills and the ability to work effectively in a highly dynamic team environment.
- Have the ability to work with a wide range of people, including other departments as well as industry stakeholder and member groups with differing interests.
- Have excellent spoken and written communication skills.
- Have proven problem-solving skills.
- Can adapt presentations to meet the needs of different audiences.
- Have strong business acumen.
- Are proficient in standard office software applications including MS Word, Excel, Access, and Outlook.
