About the Role:
The Mechanical Engineer ensures the efficient operation and maintenance of all mechanical equipment used in tunnel construction projects. Reporting to the Tunnel Plant Manager, this role is responsible for managing the entire lifecycle of mechanical systems, including implementation of safe systems, troubleshooting, and maintenance. The Mechanical Engineer plays a critical role in ensuring reliability, minimizing downtime, and maintaining safety standards.
Key Responsibilities:
  • Maintenance and Operations Management:
  • Develop and implement maintenance schedules for all mechanical systems and equipment, including Tunnel Boring Machines (TBMs).
  • Conduct regular inspections to ensure proper functionality and compliance with safety standards.
  • Oversee the repair and upkeep of TBMs and associated equipment, ensuring smooth operations.
  • Equipment and Inventory Management:
  • Plan and schedule maintenance tasks in alignment with tunnel production schedules.
  • Manage spare parts inventory to avoid downtime due to parts shortages.
  • Ensure all lifting equipment is inspected, calibrated, and tested according to legal and safety standards.
  • Safety and Compliance:
  • Implement safe work systems and issue permits for mechanical work.
  • Conduct regular safety inspections and address any issues to maintain compliance with Canadian safety standards.
  • Promote a strong culture of health, safety, and environmental (HSE) awareness among the team.
  • Data Analysis and Optimization:
  • Analyze data from TBM operations to identify opportunities for optimizing consumable usage and equipment performance.
  • Implement approved equipment modifications to enhance safety and efficiency.
  • Collaboration and Documentation:
  • Work closely with mechanics, engineers, and other stakeholders to plan tasks and ensure seamless project execution.
  • Maintain accurate records of all maintenance activities, including testing, inspections, and repairs.
  • Prepare detailed shift reports and provide updates to the Tunnel Plant Manager on maintenance progress and challenges.
Qualifications:
  • Experience:
  • 12-15 years of experience as a Mechanical Engineer, preferably within the underground construction or tunneling industry.
  • Education and Certification:
  • Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering or a related field.
  • Professional Engineering Designation in Ontario (P.Eng).
  • Technical Skills:
  • Comprehensive understanding of Canadian mechanical codes, regulations, and safety standards applicable to tunnel construction.
  • Expertise in TBM machinery and associated systems.
  • Proficiency in mechanical engineering software for data analysis, reporting, and design.
  • Soft Skills:
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities to troubleshoot mechanical issues effectively.
  • Excellent communication skills for collaboration with diverse teams.
  • Exceptional organizational and time-management skills to handle complex project schedules.

  • Background Check: Candidates may be subject to complete and pass a criminal background check prior to starting work.
  • Willingness to attend mandatory safety training and comply with all on-site regulations.
  • Ability to work in challenging underground environments with varying schedules and conditions.
