Position Overview:
As a Personal Lines Underwriter specializing in Homeowners & Dwelling Fire, you will assess risks for individual clients by analyzing client information, applying underwriting guidelines, and collaborating with agents and brokers to deliver competitive and profitable insurance solutions. Your expertise will play a crucial role in maintaining a well-balanced portfolio that aligns with the company's risk management objectives.
Key Responsibilities
- Assess property characteristics, claims history, and other relevant data to determine insurability and risk level.
- Conduct risk analysis and assessments in accordance with company underwriting guidelines and state regulations.
- Make informed decisions on accepting, rejecting, or modifying insurance applications based on underwriting policies.
- Collaborate with agents, brokers, and customer service teams to communicate underwriting decisions and address inquiries.
- Ensure compliance with regulatory requirements and company standards in all underwriting practices.
- Review the assigned book of business regularly to maintain portfolio balance and identify growth opportunities.
- Stay informed on market trends, emerging risks, and regulatory changes to adjust underwriting strategies as needed.
- Participate in training programs to stay current on underwriting best practices, product updates, and industry developments.
Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Business, Finance, Insurance, or a related field, or equivalent work experience
- 3+ year(s) experience in personal line underwriting
- Strong analytical and decision-making skills, with a solid understanding of underwriting principles
- Excellent communication skills, with the ability to work collaboratively with agents and internal teams
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite/Google Workspace applications
- Experience with underwriting software and rating tools
- Ability to interpret and apply policy guidelines and regulatory requirements
- Strong attention to detail and accuracy in risk assessment
- Time management skills with the ability to handle multiple tasks and deadlines
- Customer service mindset with the ability to build relationships with agents and brokers
- Knowledge of state-specific insurance regulations (especially for key operating states)
- Ability to adapt to changing underwriting guidelines and market conditions
Preferred Qualifications
- Professional designations such as CPCU (Chartered Property Casualty Underwriter) or AU (Associate in Underwriting) are a plus
