About/Summary

The Regulated Waste Program Coordinator (RWPC) reports to the Environmental Compliance Manager of Environmental Health and Safety (EHS). The RWPC is responsible for ensuring compliance with federal, state, and local regulations related to hazardous and non-hazardous regulated waste. This role involves managing program staff, overseeing waste disposal, implementing best practices, conducting audits, and working with internal teams and external vendors to ensure environmental compliance and proper waste management.

Job Description Details:

The Regulated Waste Program Coordinator will work with the waste services team to ensure safe, proper and compliant management of hazardous and regulated wastes including but not limited to hazardous waste, regulated chemical waste, universal waste, radiological and biological waste. This team member is expected to oversee the day-to-day activities of the regulated waste program, support all university departments and campuses to ensure regulated waste compliance with applicable laws. This position ensures compliance, operational efficiency and effective communication of the group. Specific tasks may include:

Regulatory Compliance
  • Ensure compliance with RCRA, DOT, EPA, OSHA, and other applicable regulations related to hazardous, universal, and non-hazardous waste management.
  • Maintain records of waste shipments, manifests, and disposal documentation. Prepare reports for regulatory agencies as required.
  • Perform or coordinate all necessary functions associated with hazardous waste management including transportation, storage, treatment, training, regulatory reporting and documentation.
  • Conduct periodic waste audits, inspections, and compliance assessments. Address deficiencies and implement corrective actions.
  • Participate in regulatory inspections and coordinate follow-up as needed.


Operational Management
  • Oversee waste accumulation, storage, labeling, transportation, and disposal activities while ensuring accurate recordkeeping.
  • Picks up and transports hazardous chemical and infectious wastes from generation sites to EHS processing facilities for disposal or redistribution.
  • Develop and implement standard operating procedures (SOPs) and emergency response protocols for hazardous material disposal.
  • Participate as a member of the EHS Emergency Response team and provide support during hazardous material emergencies.
  • Perform and coordinate services related to waste characterization, analytical testing, recordkeeping, and other activities necessary for compliance with regulatory requirements and professional standards.
  • Train employees in waste management procedures, regulatory requirements, and safety protocols.
  • Manage relationships with waste disposal vendors to ensure compliance with regulatory and organizational requirements. Schedule and coordinate waste processing, shipment and disposal.
  • Develop and implement continuous improvement initiatives for the Regulated Waste Program.


Communication
  • Communicate regulatory requirements clearly through written and oral formats to campus stakeholders.
  • Provide consultation to waste generators for non-routine waste streams or unique circumstances. Develop training programs, SOPs and schedules for staff and contract employees.
  • Assist the Environmental Compliance Manager in liaising with local, state, and federal regulatory agencies.
  • Foster a strong customer service approach aligned with departmental strategic goals.


Physical demands, working conditions and medical surveillance

  • Participate in the Environmental Health and Safety Emergency Response Team, including potential 24-hour emergency calls.
  • Comply with medical surveillance requirements, including medical clearance for respiratory protection, DOT physicals, drug testing and vaccination protocols. Must pass a criminal background check.
  • Capable of wearing a work uniform including steel toe shoes/boots; eye, face, and hand protection; respiratory protection (negative pressure half-face or full-face respirator); and other protective equipment or clothing as required.
  • Lift containers weighing up to 50 lbs, handle packages up to 100 lbs, and transport 55-gallon drums up to 300 lbs with a dolly. Work in physically demanding conditions, including exposure to seasonal weather changes and hazardous materials.


Required Qualifications and Education:
  • Bachelor's degree in Environmental Science, Environmental Health & Safety, Chemistry, or a related field or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • 3 years of relevant experience required.
  • Must obtain and maintain a class B CDL license within 6 months or hiring.
  • Must pass a pre-employment physical including medical clearance to wear a respirator.


Desired Qualifications
  • 4-8 years of experience in waste management, environmental compliance, or a related field.
  • Minimum of 2 years of experience in a leadership role.
  • Knowledge of governmental and institutional occupational safety regulations.
  • Understanding of occupational health, environmental protection, and industrial hygiene requirements.
  • Certifications such as CHMM (Certified Hazardous Materials Manager) or RCRA/DOT Hazardous Waste Training.
  • Experience with electronic waste tracking systems.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Excel, Word, Outlook).
  • Knowledge of RCRA, DOT, EPA, and state environmental regulations.
  • Strong organizational and problem-solving and communication skills.
  • Ability to work independently and effectively collaborate with internal teams and external stakeholders.

Target Salary Range: $87,400 - 114,900
