Clinical Associate, Food Animal Field Service
The Western College of Veterinary Medicine is seeking a qualified veterinarian to join our food animal ambulatory service team within the Veterinary Medical Centre. The successful applicant must have a proven interest in food animal practice and an interest in coaching and mentoring veterinary students. This position offers a predictable work-work and on-call duty shared across at least five practitioners.
The Western College of Veterinary Medicine (WCVM) is western Canada's regional college of veterinary medicine. Approximately 88 students from the four western provinces and the northern jurisdictions are admitted each year to the DVM program. Primary Purpose: The Food Animal Field Service (FA/FS) Clinical Associate provides food animal ambulatory service to clients of the Veterinary Medical Centre. This position also participates in the clinical instruction, supervision and mentorship of students enrolled in the undergraduate Doctor of Veterinary Medicine Program.
Nature of Work: Reporting to the Department Head, Large Animal Clinical Sciences, you will work as a member of the Field Service Section providing clinical service within the VMC. The Clinical Associate must have a good understanding of VMC and WCVM policies and procedures to appropriately meet the needs of clients and students. The work can be physically demanding and you must be able deal with emerging and unpredictable events involving large animals. This position is primarily a field service based position but has a small component of in house clinical services.
Typical Duties or Accountabilities:
Duties will include:
Provision of clinical service, including on-call and afterhours, to clients of the food animal ambulatory practice and bovine reproductive service at the VMC. Participation in the teaching and mentorship of veterinary undergraduate students. Ensuring the maintenance and growth of the caseload of the food animal ambulatory and reproductive services at the VMC.
Education: Candidate is required to have a minimum DVM or equivalent, with preference given to those with an advanced degree and/or Board certification.
Licenses: Candidates are required to be eligible for licensure to practice veterinary medicine in Saskatchewan. Candidates must possess, or be eligible for, a Saskatchewan driver's license, and must have an acceptable driving record, as determined by the University of Saskatchewan.
Experience: The successful candidate must have a minimum of 2 years experience in mixed or food animal practice.
Skills: Strong foundation in the practice of clinical veterinary medicine. Ability to utilize and assimilate available clinical information to make decisions regarding patient care. Demonstrated initiative, integrity, collegiality and professionalism along with effective oral and written communication skills. Effective time management, problem solving, organizational, and interpersonal skills. Must willing and be able to travel in the assigned region.
