Why does the job exist?
This purpose of this position is to support the New Mexico Environment Department's Radiation Control Bureau by leading and overseeing staff conducting inspections of radioactive material licensees and radiation machine registrants. It ensures compliance with state and federal regulations through compliance assistance, enforcement, and investigation of incidents involving radiation exposure or material release.
How does it get done?
- Lead a team of technical staff in establishing team goals, workload priorities, and ensure completion of program functions
- Provide technical and regulatory directions to program staff
- Create pathways for staff growth, development and accountability
- Perform all personnel actions related to direct reports (evaluations, advertisements for vacant positions, completing interviews and post-interview documentation for hiring)
- Supervise and motivate staff effectively, including daily project guidance and coordination of training to ensure that documented inspections are completed within assigned time frames
- Manage tracking and accomplishment of annual compliance inspections goals with the unit supervisor, participating in planning activities
- Assign, delegate, track tasks to ensure employee accountability for completion of assignments accurately, timely and professionally
- Work on and/or manage special projects as needed

- Occasional contact with external Federal, State and Local regulatory bodies as well as contractors and environmental not for profit organizations

Minimum Qualification
Bachelor's degree in Physical, Natural, or Environmental Science, Soil Science, or Engineering and five (5) years of work experience in public/environmental health, environmental science, Air Quality Management, Biology, Engineering, Chemistry, Geology, Hazardous Waste Management, Wildlife Management, and/or Water Resources. Any combination of education from an accredited college or university in a related field and/or direct experience in this occupation totaling nine (9) years may substitute for the required education and experience.

Employment Requirements
Must possess and maintain a valid New Mexico Driver's License. Must possess and maintain a current Defensive Driving Course certificate from the State of New Mexico or must pass and receive a Defensive Driving Course certificate as a condition of continued employment.
Working Conditions
Work is performed in an office setting with exposure to Visual/Video Display Terminal (VDT) and extensive personal computer and phone usage. Some sitting, standing, bending and reaching may be required. Must be able to lift 25 lbs. In-state travel up to 20% is required with optional out-of-state travel. Position requires extensive communication interacting with contractors, the regulated community, environmental non-profit organizations, and the general public.
