Description:

Senior Process Engineer, RD&T

Who We Are

ION Clean Energy is the industry leader in post-combustion carbon capture technologies. With the International Energy Agency stating that Carbon Capture and Sequestration (CCS) is the only technology able to deliver significant CO2 emissions reductions from the use of fossil fuels, the need for our technology is more urgent and important than ever as we all work to achieve our carbon emissions goals. Backed by recent investment from Chevron, Carbon Direct and Williams, ION's offering combines our transformational technology with a dedicated, service-driven team to set a new standard for the industry and establish ION as the leading provider of carbon capture solutions.

Position Summary

ION is searching for a Senior Process Engineer to support the Research, Development, and Technology (RD&T) team currently involved in interpreting, modeling, and delivering results within ION's pilot test program. Simulation tools rigorously built and verified by the Senior Process Engineer will then be used to directly support ION's design of large-scale commercial CO2 capture facilities worldwide. ION's employees are a group of exceptional technical and business professionals and are looking for similarly talented individuals who share our vision and mission. This is an exciting opportunity to work with, and learn from, one of the most dynamic innovators of carbon capture technology at the forefront of sustainable innovation.

The Senior Process Engineer broadly leads modeling and simulation projects based on lab and pilot data from the RD&T team. The ideal candidate will have a mastery of first-principles mass transfer models in gas/liquid or gas/solids systems that can be translated to commercial-scale, million-tons-per-annum CO2 capture projects. This position provides meticulous support and well-reasoned solutions in support of ION's commercialization path of CO2 capture products. The position will require a hands-on, innovative, detail-oriented individual that has the capability to lead development and optimization of process models according to a schedule that fully leverages ION's wide range of pilot data. They must be able to develop solutions to complex problems that require a high degree of ingenuity at the cutting edge of current research development. ION's RD&T process engineering team works collaboratively with each other and with other engineers in mechanical engineering and process controls space. At times, the role interfaces with ION's Execution Team to support large-scale commercial deployment. This role will report directly to the Senior Director, Advanced Engineering, RD&T.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Collects and classifies large datasets from across pilot programs to determine novel interrelationships between variables
  • Regresses data in current ION process models to further strengthen knowledge and confidence with current simulation tools
  • Thoroughly explores process opportunities to improve potential commercial-scale options in different economic environments
  • Develops first-principles based simulation tools for use with existing and future ION technologies
  • Documents process methodology, controls, and quality standards
  • Identifies performance standards and provides expertise in solving complex technical problems
  • Analyzes, interprets, and documents data through graphs, charts, and reports so that they are digestible for both technical and non-technical audiences
  • Presents findings and new ideas/plans through oral and written reports, presentations, and project proposals
  • Takes direction from the Sr. Director of Advanced Engineering, refines RD&T project scope and objectives, and ensures RD&T project execution is in alignment with goals

Qualifications, Education, and Experience:
  • Bachelor's degree in Chemical Engineering or related field with extremely strong experience in a highly and Development setting
  • Doctorate degree in Chemical Engineering or equivalent strongly preferred
  • 4-10 years of relevant process engineering and/or process modeling experience
  • Practical process experience from pilot plant campaigns strongly preferred
  • Detailed understanding of process modeling and process design tools
  • Excellent ability to quickly assess problems and formulate strategies to overcome issues
  • Solid understanding of methods and techniques used in CO2 capture from flue gas, industrial process gas and/or gas sweetening
  • Affinity for data analysis, regression, and underlying understanding of pilot plant results
  • Proactive nature; stays abreast of advancements in technologies and engineering standards
  • Works with a sense of urgency and demonstrates the ability to adapt to changing priorities
  • Excellent interpersonal skills. Ability to effectively describe responsibilities, offer constructive feedback, and support and encourage others
