Position Summary

The University of Georgia animal care and use program is looking for a great veterinarian to support our growing AAALAC-accredited program. Specifically, we are seeking applications to engage a full-time non-tenure clinical track faculty veterinarian jointly appointed in University Research Animal Resources (URAR) and the Department of Population Health in the College of Veterinary Medicine to provide clinical service for the program, participate in instructional activities, and support regulatory efforts. The URAR supports a broad variety of activities using diverse species; provides veterinary care to facilities which include a large ABSL3/ABSL3-Ag facility, rodent barrier/containment, rabbit, amphibian, aquaculture, agricultural and nonhuman primate areas; and promotes continuous development of a high-quality, service-oriented research resource. Reporting to the Director of URAR, the duties of this position include providing veterinary care; performing diagnostic and research-related procedures; consulting with faculty on the development of research projects; and participating in training investigators, research staff, and URAR professionals. Further duties encompass participating in oversight of compliance with applicable policy, guidelines, and laws, including biosafety; reviewing Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC) protocols and attending IACUC meetings; and mentoring and instructing veterinary students, externs, and residents as part of an emerging academic comparative medicine program based in the College of Veterinary Medicine.

This is a non-tenure clinical track faculty position at the Clinical Assistant Professor level with appointment in the College of Veterinary Medicine's Department of Population Health. The academic promotion process is managed by the department Chair.

Relevant/Preferred Education, Experience, Licensure, and/or Certification
  • License to practice veterinary medicine in a state in the United States and the ability to gain license in the state of Georgia within 3 months of hire.
  • Background working with a variety of animals such as rodents, rabbits, ferrets, cats, dogs, farm animals, nonhuman primates, reptiles, and fish.
  • Enrollment and participation in the Occupational Health and Safety Program and maintenance of all required vaccinations or other required prophylaxis based on research being conducted at all facilities.
  • Must pass a background check and random drug and alcohol testing.
  • Must qualify to work with Select Agents and work successfully in a biocontainment research environment.

  • Excellent understanding of the principles of virology, bacteriology, and parasitology and their application to colony health monitoring programs.
  • Broad understanding of comparative organismal biology and pathophysiology of conventional and laboratory animal species, and the common diseases of laboratory animals and their diagnosis, management, and/or treatment.
  • Knowledge of animal care and veterinary medicine.
  • Ability to observe animal behavior, and assess and treat problems in a wide variety of species.
  • Knowledge of zoonotic diseases.
  • Knowledge of applicable policies, guidelines, and laws
  • Proven reliability and ability to work independently to complete usual job responsibilities.
  • Effective communication skills including the ability to facilitate problem resolution, receive constructive feedback and direction, and promote excellent customer service.
  • Requires initiative, flexibility, and the ability to work in a team environment.

  • Directs the appropriate treatment and medical management of laboratory animals
  • Conducts physical examinations of research animals.
  • Interprets diagnostic test results
  • Communicates with researchers regarding clinical conditions, treatment plans, and prognosis in their research animals.
  • Performs surgeries, postoperative management, and manages pain control strategies
  • Conducts diagnostic and research necropsies
  • Performs Post Approval Monitoring (PAM) of Clinical Health Records and related records of laboratory animals to ensure compliance with approved Animal Use Proposals per expectations of the UGA Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC) and Office of Research Compliance.
  • Reports concerns to the Attending Veterinarian.
  • Serves on committees as assigned at the department, college, and university level.
  • Consults with faculty on the development of research projects.
  • Provides training for investigators, research staff, and URAR professionals.
