Job Description:
- Perform specialized and technically demanding cytology examinations to determine pathological conditions.
- Maintain laboratory equipment, supplies, and records following established accreditation guidelines and quality control standards.
- Conduct accurate technical cytological screening and interpretation, according to established procedures, for both gynecological and non-gynecological cytology samples.
- Refer appropriate cases for hierarchical review by recording classifications on slides and alerting pathologists to abnormal cell structures for further examination.
- Assist with coordinating FNA procedure schedules between endoscopy and radiology areas.
- Attend FNA procedures and perform fine needle aspiration Rapid On-Site Evaluations in a timely fashion, providing an adequacy assessment to the performing physician, and communicate in a professional manner.
- Process and prepare FNA ROSE specimens for examination, ensuring proper record-keeping and labeling of slides and specimens.
- Triage ancillary testing as needed.
- Perform the proper setup and cleanup of the FNA cart.
- Accurately enter data and results within the laboratory information system.
- Maintain screening workload and quality assurance records.
- Serve as a technical resource and assist in investigating issues or concerns surrounding the daily operation of equipment and/or specimens.
- Properly communicate scheduling or technical concerns to both operational and medical leadership.
- Operate, calibrate, and maintain equipment.
- Prepare and maintain cytology inventory by checking stock levels, anticipating supply needs, placing orders for supplies and verifying receipt of supplies.
- Collect data and prepare management reports of technological findings by collecting, analyzing, and summarizing information.
- Maintain a safe and clean working environment and protect patients and employees by adhering to infection-control, hazardous waste, and other policies and protocols.
- Perform other related duties as required and directed.
Note: On-call duties are very rare, but travelers must be willing to take on rare call shifts. No weekend work is required.
