Position Overview: The Senior Estimator will be responsible for leading the estimation process, managing junior estimators, and overseeing the preparation of accurate, detailed project estimates. The role includes budget preparation, cost analysis, and vendor management to ensure that all aspects of the project's financials are managed effectively. This position requires strong leadership skills, the ability to manage multiple projects, and a deep understanding of the construction industry's financial requirements.
What You'll Do:
- Manage and mentor junior estimators, providing guidance on daily tasks and overseeing project assignments to ensure accuracy and efficiency.
- Review and analyze project requirements, blueprints, and specifications to gain a thorough understanding of the project scope and all associated costs.
- Develop comprehensive budget estimates by carefully studying construction plans, specifications, and current market conditions to provide accurate cost projections.
- Identify and evaluate factors impacting project costs, including materials, labor, subcontractor services, and unforeseen costs, ensuring a precise understanding of project expenses.
- Prepare detailed cost breakdowns that include material take-offs, labor costs, and time estimates, ensuring these are both realistic and efficient.
- Cultivate and maintain strong relationships with vendors and subcontractors, working to secure competitive bids and pricing, and ensuring value for money.
- Oversee the collection, review, and evaluation of bids from vendors and contractors, using this data to create detailed, accurate cost analyses for each project.
- Develop and manage comprehensive Gantt-style project schedules using Microsoft Project, ensuring timelines, critical paths, and dependencies align with project goals.
- Compile and present clear, concise project budgets, cost reports, and financial forecasts to management, stakeholders, and clients to keep all parties informed of project status.
- Ensure timely submission of bids and proposals by maintaining and updating the bid calendar to reflect project timelines and deadlines.
- Monitor actual project costs throughout the lifecycle, track budget variances, and compile data for future estimates and benchmarking purposes.
What You'll Need:
- Minimum 5 years of experience as an Estimator in the commercial construction industry, with significant experience in a general contracting environment.
- Bachelor's degree in Construction Management, Civil Engineering, or related field preferred; relevant certifications a plus.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Project, Excel, and other construction management software. Familiarity with Gantt chart scheduling and cost tracking systems.
- Strong understanding of commercial construction processes, including budgeting, material take-offs, subcontractor pricing, and cost control.
- Proven ability to lead and mentor junior team members, providing guidance and support on complex estimates and projects.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to present detailed cost reports and financial forecasts to management and clients.
- Exceptional attention to detail and strong organizational skills to ensure accurate and thorough estimates.
- Strong experience in managing relationships with vendors, subcontractors, and other project stakeholders to ensure cost-effective and high-quality work.
- Ability to prioritize multiple projects and meet deadlines in a fast-paced environment.
- Estimating certifications (e.g., AACE) or other relevant qualifications are a plus.
