Description

A House Supervisor RN has direct responsibility to coordinate all facility wide activities including interdepartmental relationships, direction of facility personnel, as well as patient care and physician contact, as applicable. The House Supervisor RN must supervise patient care services being provided daily with appropriate interventions implemented to achieve positive patient outcomes. The House Supervisor RN will proactively participate in processes to guide patient care activities in the most efficient, productive, cost effective, and safe manner possible. Collaboration with others is critical while ensuring optimal customer service is provided. The House Supervisor RN will remain thoroughly informed of patient needs including ED transfers/admissions, plans of care, treatment options, physical and emotional concerns, interdisciplinary and discharge activities, and will assist with seamless care throughout the healthcare continuum. Scheduled workdays and times may vary and will include weekends and holidays.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Demonstrates positive role modeling and promotes an environment conducive with the Mission, Vision, and Values (MVV) of the hospital and in accordance with the Service Excellence Standards of Behavior.
  • Delivers and/or oversees nursing care according to the standards of care defined within the Illinois Nurse Practice Act.
  • Promotes a therapeutic relationship with patients, families, and caregivers.
  • Assists with collection and documentation of pertinent health data using competent assessment techniques in a systematic and ongoing process, which utilizes interventions appropriate for pediatric, adolescent, adult, and geriatric patients.
  • Analyzes / evaluates diagnoses / patient problems in a manner that facilitates the implementation of effective, quality care plans in collaboration with patients, significant others, and other health care personnel.
  • Collaborates with staff to identify realistic and attainable outcomes individualized to the patients' present and potential capabilities and directs care which supports obtaining this goal.
  • Assists Nursing with development of individualized plans of care that prescribe intervention to attain positive outcomes.
  • Evaluates patients' progress toward attainment of desired outcomes and redirects activities based on progress toward goals.
  • Promotes participation and acceptance of PI improvements.
  • Ensures notification of physicians /surgeons of changes in patient's condition in a timely and appropriate manner.
  • Communicates with co-workers on a timely basis including end of shift updates.
  • Promotes departmental and other educational meeting attendance.
  • Assists with staff development by coaching and mentoring in a supportive, professional manner toward improvements in practice.
  • Evaluates unit staff for clinical competency on an ongoing basis with current staff and educates and evaluates new employee performance.
  • Assists with correction of employee deficiencies by counseling and documentation of interactions.
  • Values diversity, teamwork, and dignified treatment of all staff.
  • Promotes departmental and other educational meeting attendance.
  • Assures positive employee climate hospital wide.
  • Supports peers and those in managerial roles by "managing up" in conversations with employees.
  • Makes clinical decisions and sets priorities related to workload management based on clinical knowledge and individual patient needs.

  • Maintain confidentiality of all patients, hospital, or physician related information.
  • Maintain orderly condition of assigned work area.
  • Is knowledgeable of general hospital and department specific policies and procedures and assist with their review and updates.

  • Displays accountability for actions and decisions for the total patient care process.
  • Completes assigned daily duties in timely, complete, and accurate manner.
  • Maintains the ability to adapt to reassignment to assume patient care on unit or on other units if necessary.
  • Follows expected work practices per Employee Handbook, Standards of Behavior, and MVV.
  • Displays thoroughness and accuracy of work as role model to staff.
  • Works in a safe manner, including reporting / identifying unsafe equipment or environment, this includes following and enforcing Infections control policies.
  • Utilizes critical thinking processes to resolve issues in accordance with hospital philosophy.
  • Well organized, accepts assignments willingly and accomplishes them quickly in a prioritized manner.
  • Anticipates problems, proactively develops a strategic plan, and suggests solutions as appropriate.
  • Helps as needed with duties not specifically assigned and accountable to learn tasks, which are routine for unit operations or professional role.

  • Maintain knowledge and skills necessary to communicate and interact with patients, visitors, and staff in the following age groups: Infant, Pediatric/adolescent, Adult, and Geriatric

  • Assists/directs daily, weekly, and monthly cleaning of work and storage areas.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Provides ongoing direction to Nursing and/ or Support/ Ancillary Staff members, Unit Clerks and Certified Nursing Assistants assisting in direct patient care to meet the workload needs of the unit through an initiative-taking team approach.
  • Provide active input in the interviewing and termination process.
  • Required to utilize and enforce the corrective action policy as appropriate.
  • Will complete and be active in employee evaluations.
  • Will assist in ensuring appropriate staffing levels.


Requirements

EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE
  • Graduate of accredited school of professional nursing
  • Ability to pass specific competencies for this position.
  • Proficient oral and written communication
  • 1-year general hospital experience preferred


CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS
  • Hold and maintain RN Illinois Licensure
  • CPR certification
  • Advances Cardiac Life Support (ACLS)
  • Telemetry experience preferred.
  • Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) preferred.
  • Trauma Nurse Core Couse (TNCC) preferred.


PHYSICAL DEMANDS
  • Prolonged, extensive, or considerable standing and walking
  • Required to climb, balance, stoop, and kneel.
  • Required to use arms, hands, and fingers for repetitive grasping, pulling, and pushing and feeling.
  • Frequently lift and/or move up to 25 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds. Any workload exceeding 50 pounds will require assistance.
  • Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, and ability to adjust focus.
  • Specific hearing abilities required by this job include the ability of auscultation.


WORK ENVIRONMENT
  • Works in well light, climate-controlled setting
  • Services are also provided to patients in various home care settings.
  • May be exposed to communicable diseases, hypodermic/IV needles, unpleasant sights, odors, and materials.
  • The noise level in the work environment is quiet to moderate.
