The Director, Principal Geologist will report to the SVP, Exploration and will have an active role for implementing and driving Coeur Mining's exploration strategy on the ground, through extensive fieldwork, target reviews and on-site interaction with exploration teams. S/he will have responsibility for increasing the technical standard of fieldwork in exploration teams, ensure geologic models are fit-for-purpose and exploration programs to test these models are efficient and cost-effective.

The Director, Principal Geologist will also have responsibility for completing regular target reviews and re-rankings using latest results to streamline and optimize project resource triangles, and ensure expenditure is directed to the best opportunities continuously. A key part of the mandate will involve ensuring that data is collected correctly and that the analysis of key features to identify the controls on mineralization is robust and defendable. Further, the role will be critical to developing the skill base within Coeur Mining through the practical hands-on and in-field mentorship of geologists. The role also has responsibility in New Business, monitoring and assessing competitor mineral intelligence for input into evaluating new opportunities.

The position location is flexible within North America and to be approved with Coeur Mining. Work activities will require extensive travel within North America and potentially overseas.

Other key priorities for the role include:
  • Supporting the development and execution of strategies for locating and securing new discoveries to replace depletion and increase Coeur's resource inventory.
  • Maintain the highest standards in environment, health and safety and community relations.
  • Drive technical excellence across the Exploration Group through training, mentoring, upskilling of teams, instilling industry best practice in all procedures including but not limited to soil and stream sediment sampling, pitting, trenching, drilling (Auger, RAB, RC, DDH), mapping (geology and structural measurements, regolith), QAQC, 2D & 3D interpretation & geological modelling.
  • Work cross-functionally across company stakeholders in a collaborative manner in providing hands-on and practical geological expertise to identify gaps and implement corrective actions in order to optimize geologic interpretations / models and field exploration programs across projects and new business opportunities.
  • Work with the onsite teams to interpret and analyze the results of drilling and other geological and geotechnical information to develop geologic models and mineralization theories, delineate current and future exploration targets, and evaluations of mining reserves/resources in the areas under exploration.
  • Supervise and direct technical aspects of greenfield and brownfield exploration activities including: execution of current exploration programs and the design of future programs; applying advanced modeling and conceptual targeting for new drill targets.
  • Instill a continuous improvement mindset by analyzing geological data to measure exploration operational performance against targets; provide high level technical exploration and geological expertise to determine solutions to technical and other operational difficulties and to keep the exploration processes on track.
  • Support the regular review, streamlining and optimization of the Resource Triangle and field programs.
  • Liaise with consultants and contractors regarding the geological aspects of work programs and exploration techniques; provide technical assurance to peer group and deliver / contribute to reports.
  • Mentor, coach and direct department staff through an inclusive leadership style that fosters positive cultural change and inclusive, team-oriented success to assist and enhance the delivery of exploration related projects.

Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's and/or Masters degree in Geology
  • The successful candidate will be a mining professional with a minimum of 15-years of industry experience, with a proven track record of cost-effective exploration & discovery and a passion for geology and a desire to find world class orebodies
  • Excellent understanding of geological environments, deposit models, and ore-forming processes as pertains to the latest concepts of precious and base metal deposit environment
  • Must possess solid communication skills, leadership presence, and the ability to influence and work effectively within a lean organization. Importantly, the candidate must represent the company with the utmost integrity, both internally and externally
