Company: Transmutex SA

Location: Los Alamos, NM 87544

Description:

Founded in 2019 near CERN (Switzerland), Transmutex is pioneering advancements in nuclear energy, medicine, and waste recycling by leveraging an accelerator-driven system (ADS) combined with Thorium fuel containing existing long-lived radioactive waste. Our innovative approach allows to generate intrinsically safe energy while efficiently recycling spent fuel in a proliferation-resistant manner. With our approach now recognized in the U.S., too, and Transmutex subsequently awarded a grant through ARPA-E's NEWTON program, we have established another subsidiary and invite you to join the new team implementing this groundbreaking project at Los Alamos National Laboratory.

Job description

Design, analyze, and optimize mechanical components and systems for ion source setup, including housing, cooling systems, mechanical supports and interfaces.
Collaborate with cross-functional teams to ensure manufacturing feasibility and compliance with reliability and safety standards.
Conduct stress and thermal analyses to validate mechanical designs for steady-state and high-reliability operations.
Oversee the fabrication, assembly, and testing of mechanical components, ensuring adherence to project timelines and quality standards.
Provide support during installation, commissioning, and operation of mechanical systems, including troubleshooting and upgrades.
Maintain comprehensive documentation of design specifications. Prepare reports summarizing design choices, analysis outcomes, and recommendations for internal review.

Requirements

The candidates we are looking for must have:
Master's degree in mechanical engineering or related field.
5+ years of experience in mechanical design and manufacturing, preferably within design practices for high reliability and/or a related field such as particle accelerators.
Proficiency in CAD software and mechanical simulation tools (e.g., ANSYS, SolidWorks, CATIA).
Strong knowledge of materials selection and manufacturing processes.
Proven ability to work collaboratively in multidisciplinary teams.

Additionally, it will be an advantage if you have:
Experience in particle accelerator design, especially ion sources
Knowledge of components optimization for best thermal performance.
Knowledge of electromagnetic compatibility standards such as IEC 61000.
knowledge of ASME/ISO technical drawing standards
Familiarity with industry standards for mechanical components in particle accelerators and high-power systems.
