Hours: Full Time (40 Hour Week), Day Shift, 8 Hour Shift

Position Overview:
The Stroke Program Clinical Nurse participates in the development and administration of a clinical quality improvement program to educate healthcare professionals and staff about emergent stroke care. This role functions as a clinical resource nurse for emergent stroke care, collaborating with physicians to ensure high-quality care for patients. The Clinical Nurse plans and conducts continuing education programs for both allied professionals and the general public and maintains the Stroke Registry database.

Essential Functions:
  • Collaborate with physician Stroke directors in the planning, development, and implementation of the Stroke Program.
  • Identify patients admitted with stroke and monitor adherence to standards of care, orders, nursing care plans, and protocols.
  • Establish written guidelines (standards of care, policies, procedures, and protocols) consistent with legal, regulatory, and professional standards related to stroke services, including roles and responsibilities of medical staff, nursing, and ancillary team members.
  • Maintain an active liaison with community, regional, and state committees, Stroke Care Committees, and professional organizations.
  • Monitor the use of hospital resources for stroke care and work towards quality parameters and improved outcomes.
  • Develop and present quality improvement activities to organizational and regional quality committees.
  • Ensure that the Stroke Care Pathway is implemented within the timeframe identified in documentation standards.
  • Evaluate expected outcomes that are measurable and achievable.
  • Collect, analyze, and prepare data for the Stroke Program and designation process.
  • Communicate effectively with stroke patients, families, physicians, and co-workers.
  • Act as a patient advocate and ensure effective use of resources.
  • Participate in research projects related to stroke care.
  • Provide educational information to patients, families, allied professionals, and the general public.
  • Educate physicians and staff about the Stroke Program.
  • Adhere to established policies, procedures, objectives, quality assurance, safety, environment, and infection control standards.
  • Contribute to a positive work climate and overall team efforts.
  • Enhance professional growth and development through educational programs and in-service meetings.
  • Prepare annual reports related to the Stroke Program.
  • Maintain and increase levels of certification related to the Stroke Program.
  • Perform other job-related duties as assigned.
  • Obtain a required amount of stroke-specific education annually.

Qualifications:
Required:
  • Associate's Degree in Nursing from an accredited school of nursing.
  • Completion of required stroke-specific education (initial and annual).
  • Valid Registered Nurse License.
  • Certification in Basic Life Support (BLS) from a recognized provider.
  • National Institutes of Health Stroke Scale (NIHSS) certification.
  • 5 years of nursing experience.
  • 2 years of Emergency Department or Inpatient stroke experience.

Preferred:
  • Bachelor's Degree in Nursing (BSN) from an accredited school of nursing.
  • Master's Degree in Nursing (MSN) from an accredited school of nursing.
  • Project management experience.
