Position Summary:

Engineer employees are represented by The Society of United Professionals, IFPTE Local 160. As an Engineer in the Fuels program, you are responsible to assess the safety of submissions from clients for registration or variance to the design of fuels systems and devices in accordance with the provincial act, regulations and adapted codes and standards. In addition a Fuels Engineer participates in incident review, code development and other projects to effectively improve the safety of Fuels equipment in Ontario.

Job Responsibilities:

  • Evaluate system and device submissions in relation to the Ontario Regulations and adapted codes and standards (CSA, ASME, ANSI and ISO) including:
  • Review TSSA application forms and confirm submitter's qualifications
  • Analyze the system or device's technical drawings and calculations from the submission or site inspection
  • Follow up with client to address outstanding information requirements or technical issues
  • Present and review submission with internal committees where necessary (e.g. variances)
  • Extend approval through issuing of approvals, variances and registrations as appropriate
  • Respond to client requests for consultation regarding the regulations, codes and standards
  • Collaborate with TSSA Inspectors and/or Investigators in safety incident investigations to determine compliance levels and conduct root cause analysis
  • Research changes to codes + standards and share with TSSA colleagues such as other Engineers, Inspectors and Investigators
  • Contribute to the creation and maintenance of internal process documentation such as SOP's (Standard Operating Procedures) and external documents for clients
  • Identify and ensure compliance on fuel appliance recalls (i.e. identifying and communicating risk to mfg. and CSA, issuing safety orders, follow-up) as required
  • Actively participate in promoting public safety as a member of technical standard committees and through participation and presentations at industry association meetings
  • Continuously develop knowledge of device and system design as well as applicable regulatory documentation


Job Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering, Applied Science or its equivalent as defined by Prof. Eng. of Ont. (PEO)
  • P.Eng. license is required
  • 3-5 years of engineering experience with a regulator or in the fuels industry
  • Fuels experience, specifically with Fuel Oil and/or Propane/ Natural Gas is an asset
  • Sound knowledge of fuel devices and system design
  • Detailed knowledge of the pertinent acts, regulations and safety codes and standards
  • Skills in analyzing structural, mechanical, and electric drawings, manuals, PLC programming languages and logic diagrams
  • Software application proficiency in Microsoft Office and databases
